Tactical Knife

JW---You haven't heard of the palm loaded grip??

Ok, I realize this isn't the most valid way of getting to 1000 posts...;) I try to keep my posting to a minimum... Try, mind you:o

Lycosa, I admit I have not heard of that method, and I'm sure others here would also appreciate the education.

Thank you.

And while I'm still here, MustardMan is right about buying to evaluate. You'll have a good time, and won't lose any more money than you'd lose doing just about anything else. On the other hand, it is addictive, so be careful. Or hit the search forums and look at all the ways of getting it past your wife.

. . . But, as JWBirch said, the bottom line is i have to be able to count on my knife or i dont carry it on duty. And at the price some of these high end knives cost i cant afford to buy them just to see if they will work for me. . . .

Like i said, thanks for all the suggestions and please keep them coming.

Here's my suggestion. . . You and Birch get drunk. . . Put your ideas and requirements in an email. . . send it to me. . . I'll draw up my interpretation of what you want. . . we'll tweak it. . . we'll make it. . . we all get drunk . . .

Please note how important the drinking component is here.

MarshJr and JWBirch, send in your folder design.

psssst...could you just pass him a drawing of the old dog skinner or rat hunter????? just slap a pommel on it...with all the drinkin'...he'll never notice!

muhwahahahaaaaa

JW---With palm-loaded grip, the pommel sits in the pad, or heel, of the palm. The handle is gripped firmly by the last three fingers. The thumb and index finger curl around but don't squeeze the hilt. This grip allows for accurate, powerful, cuts or thrusts.
Wait till you try it.
A rounded pommel works best. :D

JWBirch...inverted carry was used by many of us before "molle vests" were issued and you just had basic webbing. Horizontal carry was'nt possible and inverted does enable an easy draw when lying prone compared to belt carry. I still carry like this as I am used to it and my gear is where I expect it to be....which is an asset when in difficult and stressfull situations.

And if Hollwood beckons....just show me the money!!:D:D

I am looking forward to seeing what comes of this ... I mean the knife design:D

Out of curiosity, have you ever seen this version of the SAR4 ? If you really wanted to lighten it up for a vest, you could chop the end of the handle even more.

I agree with you JW Birch regarding the quillon/guard.

My personal preference would be to modifiy the HG-55 in three ways, although the length might be a tiny bit long according to your spec list. I'd keep the HG-55 current thickness for this use.

1. Make the integral front guard (talon hole) longer 3/8" to 1/2".

2. Put a matching one on the spine.

3. Make the pommel tip the same shape. (The reason I'd not put a sharpened point on the pommel is due to how & where this particular knife would be carried per this thread.)

For those who like the SAR better, just make those modifications to it. (I like the SAR, but I just like the HG-55 "mini-bowie" better.)

Well, I put up a request for a PhotoChopper to do just about that for me, Looks like Randucci went and took care of it with a grinder. Thanks for posting!!!

BillyJoeBob, I like your style. Not sure about a second talon hole up top, but between that and a 5th of bourbon we could keep a conversation alive for a good long time :)

Randucci's mod is about 95% there. Edited... taking offline for the time being, but please keep the input coming.

Thanks for posting that, I wasn't expecting to find the SAR4 on my list to photoshop, but it may be the base model of choice.

As Jerry has kindly answered that he'd prefer the photoshopping venture to take place off line I will request here that photoshopped blades not be added to this thread. I'm sure genuine modded knives are welcome as Randucci's mod above.

While I really like the blade shapes of Busse knives such as the NO & BM, I love a "bowie". I can't believe it took me so long to actually order the HG-55s (a mini-bowie). I'd just rather see a double guard and a "pointier" pommel.

On an unrelated note, a 7.5" blade with the other ideas I've mentioned on the HG-55, and that would replace a HALO Attack as my hoghunting blade. I will not take the chance of slicing my fingers off with a "missed" stab. (I've actually taken my Crossada hoghunting which cost more than probably everything I used hunting back when I did it. Now my bows & essential accessories have become more expensive.)

Have you seen the Scrap Yard Regulator yet? What do you think about Res-C grip without steel reinforcing the guard? It is a good looking blade.

{{Please don't take any of these comments as criticism, just personal preferences from someone who really, really like knives by Busse.}}

I apologize for getting off topic. I'd like a double guard on a 4.5-5.5" bowie-style knife for the tactical purposes mentioned by the original poster. However, I just re-read his original post which noted a more utilitarion blade, which would be more like a Busse SAR or Scrap Yard Dumpster Mutt.

Another note related to my choices: Nothing wrong with using a knife as a pry bar if that's somebody's choice, but I'm less likely to do so than some of the rest of us.

BJB, I'd say a Scrap Yard Regulator toned down to 9.5" would be perfect in its own right. That's a good call. A HG-55 toned down to 9 3/4 and thinned to between .19 and .22 would probably need nothing else. Right now, the Dumpster Mutt and its variants are perfect as well, right now, no mods needed. As is the SRKW HRLM, although it could stand to lose an ounce or two which Horton could probably take out from under the slabs. There are knives in the Family that work, we're just playing with the idea of doing one in the Busse line, with full-on Busse characteristics.

The trick is getting it in INFI. The Scrapper 4 fits the bill nicely, but it's long gone.

Yes on the prybar. Most guys use their folder for cutting anyway. The prybar is sharp because... um, why not? Cutting is about 3 or 4 on my list of things a vest knife needs to do. Prybar, drill, thing smasher, cuts stuff... Need to find something else to clean my ears with though...

Edited to add: just wanted to throw out there that I was goofing off a bit with the above statement about prybar versus cutting ability, but it isn't too far off the mark. In the real world I've used my vest knife at least as much for other stuff as for cutting, but when I was cutting I needed it to cut. So in reality, if you don't have to sacrifice cutting ability for lateral strength, don't. I don't, I wouldn't suggest you do. I was just illustrating the point of multi-use capability. And what we're playing with off-line will certainly not sacrifice cutting ability for lateral strength in the least. Cheers :) and thanks for keeping me honest

We're working on it, it's coming... Two weeks. :)

Just a quick update...

I decided to keep my strider EB-T on the vest. So far i just haven't found anything that can beat it.

HOWEVER

I still had Hog fever so i picked up a skinny ASH to wear either on my belt or to keep in my breacher kit. This knife is absolutely beautiful!! It looks like a great knife and i hope it holds up well.

It came with a mashed cat kydex sheath which is very nice. I am putting this guy into service immediately and i will let you know how it does!
