It's a "long nosed cross peen" (forging hammer) design I'm working on. :)

All those sharp corners on that face, that hammer needs a bit of dressing.

You have to know how to use it. :)

... a little dressing to suit your taste.

The sharpness of the long nosed end helps pop scale, and get into tight places, shoulders etc... The round flat face is for working out dents, driving punches etc...

The long nose also gives clearance from the tongs, bar and hand when drawing and shouldering parallel to the stock, and requires less flexing of the wrist.

The relatively small surface area of the faces with extra back up mass/weight behind them gives better penetration into the steel.

Keep in mind also that this hammer will most likely be precision machined, rather than cast (or forged).

I'm also working on variations of the "long nosed" idea.

... It's a "designer hammer". :)

Nathan is going to help me with the prototype, and maybe some of the actual production. :)

Thanks Nathan!

It looks a good bit like the one you use on your DVD. That one looked very heavy though -- this could be made in various weights I assume?

Dan, Yes! the hammer I used in the video was very similar and many of my freehand techniques rely on it. I thought I should try and make that style available and improve it with the broad flat face on the other end , similar to the stubby one I use in my video.

Once we get it in the computer, I think we can tweak the scale and make variations of it. Nathan knows more about that part though.

I'm guessing the weight of this hammer to be about 3-4 pounds, just right for up to about 1 inch stock.

Thanks Stephan!

I'll see what I can do first, and then look into distributors...

These won't be cheap hammers, so there should be room for the retailers. :)

To give a little better idea of dimensions, The hammer head is 7 inches from face to face, with a 14 inch handle.

This is just the model, and there may be some minor changes due to the manufacturing process etc.

If anyone is interested in these, email me to get on the waiting list.

Well lookey there. The hammer. If I'm making that, I better hurry up and learn how to machine stuff... :D

Here are some of the hammers I styled it after. The one on top I forged when I had my power hammer set up, and have used it for the bulk of my hand forging ever since. It’s styled loosely after some Mexican raising hammers I’ve seen. It’s closest to the size of the new design. The middle one I forged from a ball peen, and the bottom one I picked up in a trade, not sure what it is, no marking.

Here's some screen dumps from the computer modeling and a shot of the prototype in progress,... thanks to Nathan the Machinist.
