TechStudio K01 Profile Sharpening System

Glad there is a thread here about this system. I got in on the tail end of the Nov-Dec shipment so I am waiting, these will be the longest three weeks, but it gives me a chance to read and learn :) I am really wondering the best setup for stones, I see in their videos Sergey has about 10 different stones in a bin, and honestly, I know so little about sharpening knives....I don't really even know what questions to ask.

I have ordered the Boride T2 Stones, the basic profile stones and the two diamond stones. I figure I will use them all eventually. My questions are whats really the best setup for stones?

From what I read anything below 200 is only for major repair work, then from 200 what? 400, 600,1200, 2500.....and from here I am a little lost. I have found 1 micron down to .050 diamond micron sprays for polishing. Is it better to use the paste on leather, ceramic, stone, composite, :concern:, what should I do! :) Id rather stay away from sand paper, but if there are some advantages, what would they be? Whats the life of a stone?

What steps do you do through when you sharpen?

The Venev stone you are referring to is a combination stone 20/14 - 7/5 . which is approx (20 microns) or 700 grit on 1 side and (6 microns) or 2500 grit on the other side. so in english we would read 20/14 - 7/5 as 700 - 2500.

I see, thank you.

This table has micron/grit conversions that are somewhat different. Is it a Canadian thing?

I still think the 20/14 side is around 1k going by feel. It is a lot finer than my ~600 grit stone and nearly the same as my 1k Norton.

And yes, there are different "grit" sizings around the world. There are different standards in the USA, EU, Japan etc but microns are all the same.

You need to go through the basics of sharpening first and understand how the stones works. I like his videos here, he explains very good.
Don't worry that he use regular stones without a machine like Profile. You need to understand what happens to the knife when you do the sharpening.
What happens to the knife edge?

Do you need to flatten your stones?

Normally the guys sharpen kitchen knifes with 1000grit and then go to 6000grit for polish:

Received mine as well earlier last week but didn't get the chance to open it till now.
Same thing as others, the "profile abrasives" were replaced with diamond ones :/.
Two items that I've ordered are just missing and I received acrylic blanks that I didn't order.

Tsprof is there an email address which I can contact and get a reply?

On their website: +1-800-209-0311 Toll Free (10 a.m - 10 p.m UTC+3) paultechman@hotmail.com It takes him a few days to respond though, so be patient.

They ran out of the profile abrasives so they "upgraded" orders to diamond. On your packing sheet are other things crossed out and items handwritten in?

Thanks, will try that email, my previous ones were ignored for weeks.

Profile abrasives are crossed out and replaced with Venevskie Diamonds, the two items that are missing don't have check mark written next to tham

Has anybody from the October batch still not received their sharpener yet? Mine left Moscow on the 19th and now almost a month later still nothing.

Check the tracking number on your countries Postal tracking site and if it hit customs it should show up. I got mine 10? days after it shipped.

EMS says that it "Departed from export office" in Moscow on October 19th and USPS says "Origin Post is Preparing Shipment"

Those that have received their kits how are you liking them so far? What kind of results are you getting?

If you can't get Paul by email call him up. There is a 1-800 number on his website now. Seems like that one was lost before it left Russia.

Well, the diamond stones I received have 1mm of abrasive (diamond and resin mix) and are not flat, they are high in the middle and lower on the edges and I have no way of flattening them so it makes a pain to sharpen. I removed a good amount of steel from a sledge hammer head but it had little to no effect on the stone itself which is nice as it means they will last a long time.

The good news is I am getting sharper knives than I have ever been able to get by hand. I could just never develop the consistency to get great results.

k-03 2017 model? Look very good, a lot of improvements!

Are you just going to ship out hybrid versions between ko2 and ko3 until you are caught up? At what point will you be shipping out the k03 version only? I really like the upgrades on the ko3. How do people who placed their orders but have not recieved yet know what version/features we will be getting?

Too bad I don't speak Russian so I could enjoy more vidoes until I get mine!!!

All the improvments are going to be introduced one by one during the next few months, since they need to be tested. So yes, you are right, at first it will be a hybrid version. There will be a price increase also.

+ Quality of the system itself is as expected. Heavy, overbuilt and precise.
+ Manual is better than I was expecting from Russian company.
+ Using system is very simple
1. Thank you for a good feedback.

+/- Instead of 5 grits of "Profile abrasives" I received two double sided "Resin bonded diamond abrasives" made by Venev industrial diamonds so now I have 4 diffrent grits instead of 5. These are little wider stones, but thickness is about half of the stones I ordered. No 45 degree bevel but these hold in place just fine. Overall quality of the stones seems to be quite high quality maybe even much better than those Grinderman stones. Just little bit unhappy that nobody contacted and asked about this switch...
2. We had to replace standart Profile Abrasives with the Set #3 (Venev Dimonds) immediately when we ran out of them. Sorry for that inconvenience again. I promice, in future we will notify our customers about any changes.

- Quality of the "military style box" is baaaaaad. Plywood was delaminated from multiple points and one screw was rolling around in the box. Cardboard box was intact, so no harsh mishandling in the transit I suppose. Fixed it with some glue.
3. Yes, the green wooden boxes have durability issues, now we are working on that trying to find compromise between durability and lightness, as the shipping cost depends on the weight.

-Torx wrenches and not a single torx screw in the system. Why?
4. Since the device is complex and consist of various parts and matherials, we cannot make it with only "one screw fits all".

- Glass blanks I ordered with the system were just acrylic blanks without 45 degree bevel. Glass would be longer lasting I suppose.
5. Yes, glass blanks should`ve been called plexiglas blanks. Language issue that is already fixed on the website.

I've sharpened only one knife, while results were amazing, I'm guessing much more can be done with experience and I also lack proper stones.

The kit itself is great from usability and quality perspective, built like a tank.
Sadly the ordering process didn't went all that well and few items that I've ordered are missing (trying to resolve this now.)
