Hey fellas!

Im a teenager who has always carried around a swiss army knife or a lil slippy. I also have a buck 110 and an endura...and was wondering what you guys think about a teenager carrying one of those? What are your personal opinions? Any legal considerations i should worry about if i carry one?

Thanks!

I did when i was your age. Actually i carried a benchmade bali in a sheath, then later i carried an kershaw blur. As long as you are responsible it doesnt matter your age. Depending on your age and your area, there may be laws that regulate when and where though. Some areas dont aloow minors to carry during the night and early morning. Also the knife laws for nione minors apply to.

That all depends on how responsible you are. I was carrying a knife well before I was a teen. Got into a little trouble also. As far as legal goes I think that depends on where you live. Use it don't abuse it & don't be dumb.( That last one might be hard for a teenager.)

Oh it is. Im not at all far removed. It is. espeacially when your drinking.

sfs08 dont drink. LOL:D

I actually got a speacial knife just for when i would go out to drink. Invest in a coldsteel voyager for those wild nights. You wont mind if they are lost or confiscated and they will get the job done.

If you wear your pants around down around your ankles and call your knife a "Shank Joint" then you should just put it down now and find a new hobby. If you are a normal teenager and like to be respectfull then carry away. I have carried a knife since I was 10 years old and am now 31. I feel every law abiding young man/woman should have a nice knife to carry. Just be aware of where you are going and what you carry when you go there. I have big scary tactical knives that I take into the field or camping and a Swiss Army Ranger for normal day to day. No one seems bothered by it.

Been EDC'ing a knife since I was about 13, I'm 20 now. I haven't had any problems with it, but I also haven't had any cops search me in my life either.

I asked about this question on officer.com forums, and got some mixed responses (some of them are pretty outrageous too, claiming they would arrest me for "concealing" a 3" Benchmade Mini Grip if I was in my car), but mos said as long as I was respectful and it didn't have the dead prositute from down the street's blood on it, I would be fine.

If you avoid trouble then I wouldn't worry about it. I dont find myself being questioned by cops all too often, and I tend to use my SAK Bantam when in non knife-friendly places.

What ever you do never bring any pocket knife to school. My friend found out the hard way. He forgot that he had a SAK in his bag from a boy scout trip, and some how a teacher saw it. He was expelled for the year.

Wow, I remember many a time a teacher in elementary (5 - 6th grade and up) all the way through high school would ask for a guy in class to pull out a pocket knife for cutting a box or string or something. Of course I grew up in a small rural area where most people farmed and hunted and such, so it was more uncommon for folks not to have a knife than the other way around. I think the only time I ever got in "trouble" for carrying a knife was in the 2nd or 3rd grade, and while trying to impress the "pretty girl" in class, I showed her my knife. I dunno, it made since at the time that any girl in her right mind would be swept away by a little folder, anyway, she ratted me out to the teacher who took my knife for the day (but of course handed it back to me before I left class). Oh the good ol' days are long gone it seems.

Started EDC'ing a Spydie in grade 9. No probs unless you wanna go around showing it to people. BTW, carrying in waistband is good for no one seeing it. Carry away, just don't give anyone a reason to say you have a "weapon".

Exactly--A knife is a tool. It can be a weapon, but so can a hammer, and no one calls a hammer a weapon!;)

I agree with USAFSP 100% on this one.

I've carried literally hundreds of different knives, for different purposes, every day since I was 10 years old. I am 29. I have between one and four knives on me at any given time (usually a native, ladybug on keys, some type of SAK) I have carried knives for utilty, self defense, and simply because I enjoy having a knife that i may just want to look at.

stick to a folding knife, and avoid anything tactical for now. the impression you make is important, as much as we would like it not to be.
don't dress like a hood, act tough, get in fights, or drink beers.

I am sorry, but for the most part, teenagers these days are f*cking idiots, who want to be treated like adults but don't act even remotely close. The hip-hop wear, sideways ball caps, big chains and baggy pants attract unwanted attention, and a knife clipped to a pocket of a teenager's wigga pants is going to be construed as a weapon.

be discreet and be responsible. DO NOT TAKE IT TO SCHOOL. my brother is a schoolteacher, and he's seen middle school students expelled for carrying swiss army knives.

all in all, a knife in the hands of a responsible teenager is no different than in the hands of a responsible adult. know your local laws though, knife carrying can wait if it is going to cost you a criminal record.

Well, I have been carrying a knife since I was 7 or 8 years of age. I was responsible with it, and taught proper handling AND respect.(I am now 39) . I agree with what USAFSP said. Please be smart!!!

Thanks for the responses guys!

As for the ''wigga'' stuff...my favorite wear is just jeans and a t-shirt! The closest I get to that would be a backwards cap with sunglasses every now and then! oh..and maybe when a good country or classic rock tune comes on!

As for edc...I would definately prefer the spydie because of the weight, and being able to open and close is one handed. The clip is wonderful as well!

But is there a concern that it may be to tactical?

I'm 18 and I carry a Ritter Mini Grip, but never to school though. Like what other people said, know your local knife laws and be smart. People tend to suspect teenagers as trouble makers, so you got to be extra respectful and careful. Never "show off" your knife to sheeple, because that would only get you in trouble.

Never get yourself in a situation where drawing a knife will be misunderstood. Be discreet, avoid physical confrontation.

Carried a tac folder of some variety throughout high school along with an SAK, never had a problem directly relating to my EDC (obv. school didn't have a zero tolerance policy, or even close; they changed school regs a year after I transferred in, adding a clause about 'weapons').

Also, don't stab yourself because you'll bleed.

I've left knives in my pockets on accident when I was still in high school. I went to the officer and told them that I was out hunting the weekend before and forgot it was in my jacket. They held the knife for me (but the secretary opened it and couldn't figure out how to close a liner lock), and let me take it with me at the end of the day.

Just be straight up with people about it and you wont have any problems.

Since your either going to be driving if not already, my suggestion is for if you get pulled over. If the officer wants to search your car or asks you to step out, before you get out, keep both hands on the wheel and inform him you have a pocketknife in whatever pocket. Honesty before the search in these situations usually results in either getting a lecture or the knife back. (I had an officer actually comment that it looked expensive and was nice as he handed it back to me). Worst case is he may confiscate it, which sucks but is better than getting a arrested.

I forgot that I had a Boker clipped to my back pocket in High School... Thankfully I had a rather long shirt on and noticed that odd "I have a knife pushing into my ass" feeling as soon as I got to first period. Just unclipped it and put it all the way in the pocket. No problems as long as your school doesn't have metal detectors. Thankfully I'm in one of eight or so in all of NYC that still don't have metal detectors...

Aside from that, I only carry when I have a reason. I have a semi-EDC Boker, a much larger CRKT for camping and upstate, and a 1 inch .50 cent antique knife which fits into the coin pouch of my wallet... No one has ever given me problems. Just avoid trouble and avoid using it. Carry a good metal pen if you're paranoid about situations.
