Teenage Carrier?

I encourage any legal knife carry (and the protesting of laws that prohibit knives). I carried a Buck when I was young, and a spyderco delica in my mid teens. In the latter case, I did so in violation of my high school's policy on such things, which in hindsight could have been disastrous.

Responsible knife carry ought to be encouraged, particularly among youth. I can't imagine why we would want to produce high school graduates who are incapable of simple tool use, have no respect (or appreciation) for cutting instruments, and cannot see mangoes as viable snacks at work ;)

It has been sad to watch the securitization of schools that has taken place over the last 10-15 years. I still skip a beat when I read about metal detectors, zero-tolerance policies for SAKs, and the like. One of the long term effects of this will be fewer pocket knives handed down generationally in the future, as the concept of knife-carrying becomes increasingly discouraged.

I agree totally with mike. Carrying knives and guns should be about when someone is responsible and mature enough to be safe, not age. I've been carrying a knife since I was 11 years old. I was 17 when I started carrying a gun. So far, I've not even wounded anyone, except when I cut myself.

Hi Sfs08,

First check your local laws carefully. It's a drag spending the night in jail just because the knife you're carrying is illegal for one reason or another. Eg: An Endura or Buck 110 is oversize for the city of Denver.

Don't carry it into school unless you school permits it.

Knife carry these days requires respect. Respect for legal and social "rules. Respect for Non Knife people (NKP) and their fears. Respect for your peers. Respect for the knife.

Keep it clean. Keep it sharp.

I think I've been carrying a knife since I was about 5 or 6, always had some sort of knife in grade school, the teacher would take it away if I was playing with it in class but give it back at the end of the day, recess was OK to play with your knife. Times have changed, I used to take my Buck 110 to high school and never had problems, To me, a nice gun or knife was just as attractive as a nice car or bike, just a hobby to me. In metal shop we were encouraged to reblue our rifles as a project, we also made knives and throwing stars as projects. Just be careful and think first.

As a fellow teenager, my advice is............

.....

.....

...just carry the knife. Be smart with it. Keep it sharp, keep it clean, don't do anything stupid with the knife or while you're carrying the knife, and you'll be all set.

im 15 i and cary a knife and never had a problem :D

that doesn't mean its legal. i have an issue with advice being given which could get the advisee hurt or locked up. some people might be foolish enough to take the advice of a 15 year old seriously.

First find out if it is legal in your area.

Next, ask both of your parents for their permission. Respect starts with your parents.

If you think you do not need to ask them or you think they might say no then you probably should not carry one.

PS. If you are 17 and enlist in the military then nobody should care what you carry.

I'm a teenager too and i carry a cold steel scimitar with me every day and my new K-bar around my house. It just scares a few people mainly those who don't like knives. i even had a friend tell me that knives are gay.

Well, I must say that I have caught my Benchmade Griptilian watching Will and Grace a few times, but I always figured he was flipping through the channels.

some knives are gay. not that there's anything wrong with that.:D

+1 to hog feet. ask your parents and DO NOT bring it to school.

Always be smart!

I have been carrying since I was 12, and have never had a problem. Of course, if you carry in violation of (stupid) laws, you can get in trouble.

As for carrying at school, metal detectors are your worst enemy! Be aware of them. (Remember, even if there are no walk-through metal detectors, you never know when some "wand nazi" may appear!) Although I am completely against the "zero tolerance" policies that most schools have these days, I cannot recommend carrying a knife because expulsion from high school is a very serious, and very real possibility.

Let me just add, that the "zero tolerance" policy against violence is just as ridiculous as the one against knives. We already have enough laws to prosecute and punish those who commit violent acts. "Zero tolerance" for violence is really just "zero tolerance" against self defense. Bullies are allowed to taunt and menace as long as they are not "violent," but if someone finally turns around and pops them on the nose, they are considered the sole offender!

Sorry for the rant, but I get so tired of seeing injustice in power.

As another teenager that carries I knife I think everything has been covered. Such as keep it very legal (well below the legal size) and nothing to scary or tactical.

Also try to keep it hidden where possible and be very careful about lending it to other your age, some will try to stab something with it  not helpful

Another thing, may be carry a Classic SAK/Spyderco Labybug (though this would be illegal for me) to use around NKP's. I do and it means you can keep the big knife hidden when you need a knife but dont want to scare people.
