Testing Banner Ads - it's not a bug, it's me screwing things up

Not to dominate this thread...

But thanks, anyone who wants to make a buck here needs to have a membership.

I think anyone that wants to buy/sell, has to have one.

If you want to use space for photos, you should have to pay...

I'm fine with all that, and that is why I am still a paying member. Well that and the fact that there is a lot of good info. here and some nice guys... not to mention some sweet knives :)

Just tell me by next week, us paying members, will be free of this uh, mess :)

And hey, perhaps, all ads for non paying... only top banner ads for gold, and no ads for platinum and makers.. sounds good to me :)

And one last thing.

Spark- Thanks for being upfront and accessible to us users here.

Spark, one suggestion I would make is asking the registered users who will be seeing these ads to kindly disable any sort of adblock software they use for bladeforums to help support the forum without dipping into their own pockets if they choose not to purchase a membership.

His name's Chris, Paul Long's sheath making ability has nothing to do with the current situation.
Cheers,
Kirby

1. He doesn't need a lawyer.
2. He was disrespectful to Paul for no reason, that is why I stepped in. There is no cause for that.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

1. Nor does Paul Long.
2. To a, in my opinion minor, extent you're right, he was being disrespectful. But responding in kind isn't the best course of action. I responded because you were being disrespectful to my friend.

Cheers,
Kirby

Not trying to start a fight here. I said what I said because I took what he said as complaining even though Spark is doing what he can to fix the ad problem.

Since I don't feel like stirring up drama, I sent an apology to Paul Long.

Did you guys forget what thread you are in?

I apologize Kevin, dropping it.

If I insulted you Steven, I apologize as well.

We are in the "get rid of ads for paying members thread" thread...

My only issue, if I were a non paying member and had to live with ads.. is the ads that are listing in a persons post...

Top banners ok, bottom banners ok.. if you have to have a 3rd.. it would be better if it were to appear between posts, almost as it's own post. I doubt the forum allows ads between posts, and to make them be actual posts.. can't work either..

Just everyone, PAY. :)

I'm referring to the OT talk about Paul

No argument there, but 300x250 ads help and are an organic ad location in the software.

Chiming in as a "Gold" level paying member. A suggestion above is for some paying members (below "Platinum" level membership) to see certain ads. I would like to respectully disagree with this suggestion. This is a great site that I check very regularly and am happy to support with money in exchange for an advertisement-free experience ($35/yr). My personal perspective is: cash = no advertisements; avertisements = no cash. No offense intended; just utilizing the opportunity to discuss in this thread.

Doing what I can guys. We're still working on placement and then the filtering aspects will start getting plugged back in.

I really became a paying member to stop annoying ads from displaying (I also watch TV without commercials).

Eventually, I got around to the idea that supporting the site with a fee was a good thing since it contributes to the dissemination of knife knowledge and information.

I think more members should contribute a fee if they're going to post.

I see people sign up for a membership just to get in on a giveaway!

I wonder what percentage of members are paying members and what percentage have less than 10 posts...

I think anyone who thinks that a site like this is cheap to run needs to understand that it takes a TREMENDOUS amount of time. Sure, hosting is relatively cheap. But it takes someone with some technical expertise to keep the site running, and it takes an owner who is virtually on call 24/7 to keep things running smoothly. It's a thankless job - truly. No one is ever happy, and everyone knows better than you how to run the site. I owned and ran one of the largest wrist watch discussion forums on the net and made good money doing so....eventually....after a lot of years working for free. Why do people hate it when someone makes money? Anything worth doing is worth doing for a profit.

Of all the issues I personally have with Bladeforums, revenue generation certainly isn't one of them.

Much better placement now, when the banners where at the very top they were in front of some of the buttons. It may take up a little more space in the lineup, but the visibility of the forum buttons is more important. imho.

Notifications, welcome, and profile settings are what I mean. :) Well done so far! Some forums have ad's plastered on EVERY open spot available no matter the membership level, its a kaleidoscope of blinking rectangles and spangly squares. Yours so far is so much better.

Thanks for that feedback. At this point we're almost done with ad placement and probably won't be adding any more within the forums themselves. Thank you for your patience thus far.

I have some feedback... No jokes... After you moved the top banner lower it seems that all of the text is greyer/softer. Less contrast? Or my eyes are fooling me. Anyone else see this?

I am seeing less contrast today also for some reason and I just logged in for the first time in the last 1/2 hour. I even recalibrated my monitor. I thought it was my eyes also at first but the forum is definitely still a slightly lighter shade. Weird.

I am also seeing many posts (including one of my own) printing half way across the page.

alfred mcdougal's is all the way left to right but alex's is half way.
