Texas Camp Knife!

We're supposed to talk about the knives, not the ordering process, on the forum. But I wanted to let you know that there's a support group for people like us (people who miss all of the SFO early reservations). We have an account on Pinterest.com but we don't have any photos.
haha. good one!

There's several posts regarding excitement for the split spring design on the Whittler and I'm wondering if someone wouldn't mind clarifying what's so exciting about it? Is it just the nostalgia of a true split back, or is there a functional advantage. I'm guessing the true split back is maybe a bit slimmer and the main blade will have a stronger spring vs sandwiching two springs together? I'm just really confused about this....

I'm not aware of any functional advantage. Some old knives have 3 springs and some have 2 wedged springs, so I'm not sure if it's a matter of "nostalgia" either.

Three springs can make a fairly thick knife unless you omit the center cut scales ("liners") and/or use very thin springs. Some of the old knives did omit the center cut scales. They were plenty sturdy without them. In the words of Tony Bose, if they hadn't removed them then it would be like carrying a potato in your pocket. :D

A wedged backspring is a more complex design and is more difficult to do well. A nicely executed wedged backspring is a good example of the cutlers art.

It could start with different (thinner) blade stock, don't know though. That slices better. It will probably be thinner on the main blade side and thicker toward the secondaries, that I like the feel of. It will inherently be thinner than the camp. It will probably be somewhat slender and long with a huge clip. It will most definitely feel very different than the blocky camp knife. Look at a 57 with punch (two spring) and a 57 whittler. They most definitely feel different in hand. Some people like, some don't.

Looks like I will get a handful of these knives before the Oregon Show!
Thank you GEC!! My advice: Buy them when you are sober!!:D

Hahaha! Fitting for all of the talk of people on the fence or not liking the size. [emoji109]

What a great label! Oh, and where do I buy a canned chicken? ☺

This one is destined to become soup!! My daughter bought it for me as a joke, but I can see it as a nice batch of chicken-vegetable souper dooper soup!!
I think it came from a guy named Joe!!:D

We usually keep a couple of those caned chickens on the shelf in case the power is off for extended periods after a winter storm. May not be gourmet chow but they aren't that bad.

This looks awesome, nearly a perfect knife for me. A 4 inch "urban camper" version that replaced the can opener with a flathead bottle opener would be a great future project. ;)

Hopefully I can get one of these to go on our spring camping trip that we're planning!

Now that's one I would buy.
