Texas Camp Knife!

I know this is the Camp Knife thread, but has anyone gotten a Whittler in their hands yet? I was just wondering how its construction compares to the camp knife. I'm making a wild guess that it's a bit thinner and a split spring?

Steve, here's a couple of comparison shots of the Texas Camp Knife and Texas Whittler...

I was just looking at my Charlie camp and Tidioute whittler and thought I'd show the difference between the clips and sheeps. You took care of that. Thanks

I really like the sheild on that Texas camp knife. The brass wedge on the whittler seems rare for GEC, I'm not sure I've seen that yet. Very nice looking.

Interesting that the shield is placed centrally on this Texas camp model, but not on the upcoming jig bone Texas cattle knife. I am curious as to the shift in its position.

I'm thinking the same thing. I'm near positive using brass there is a 1st for GEC. (speaking solely for their whittler models)

My understanding is that all the Waynorth SFO'S, camp/whittler/cattle, will have the same centered shield. The Tidioute and Northfield whittlers/Cattle will have offset while the T&N Camps had centered. True to form GEC keeps us on the edge of our seats waiting for the unpredictable. I personally find it keeps it interesting.....

Pictures are up on the GEC website for Charlie's whittler and cattle knife, both feature offset shields.

I was too slow on the click to order from my favorite dealer, but I did manage to come up with a Whittler. I went with the red micarta, seeing as the only difference was a cut swedge and lined bolsters. I have to say, I REALLY like the whittler. It's huge, but it's slim and svelte in comparison to the camp knife. Sorry, I hope I don't derail the camp knife thread.....

Here it is right out of the tube, oil on blade, next to my work EDC.

I feel like I am going to regret not picking up one of the SFO Camp Knives at the OKCA show, but I really am rather constrained in my budget right now. It is such a great looking knife. I really like the design.

Steve:
Look down on the spine of the camp and whittler clip. The whittler is "stepped in" (double off-set??) ground. It starts with the same stock but is essentially thinner than the camp. Obviously, the sheep is a bit shorter, but still substantial enough to take care of "flat blade" chores.

The whittler actually uses thicker stock (0.158'') than the camp knife (0.125''). The whittler blade is ground to 0.115'' at the spine, and is tapered to 0.090'' just ahead of the nick - which makes for a better slicer.

My only beef is they didn't use a long pull on the whittler. With the nick in the swedge, it just doesn't look right to me.

I prefer the drawn swedge/nail nick of the Tidioutes on this whittler run. Didn't the 77 barlow have the nick in the cut swedge as well? Maybe the first ones with the clip and wharnie......

I've got to admit, I beyond bummed when I saw that the camp knife came with a sheepsfoot blade in place of the bottle opener/screwdriver. I love camp/scout pattern knives and carry one every day, but I also love GEC lol. I thought my perfect knife had finally been made.....but alas, it was not meant to be I guess:(

If anyone up top at GEC is listening, please make that exact knife with a bottle opener/screwdriver!!

I was pretty unhappy at first also. But after using my Texas Camp for a couple weeks, I'm okay with it. The can opener is actually a superb cap lifter, so it's only the flathead that's been lost. And the sheepsfoot is immeasurably handy. I guess I'm actually starting to prefer GEC's take on the scout pattern. I would like to see a more normal sized version though. I'm having a hard time finding an easy way to carry this monster around.

I'm really glad to hear that the can opener works so well as a cap lifter but truth be told, I use the flat head part of the cap lifter ALL the time. It'd be especially useful on the farm we just bought. With out the flat head caplifter, I'd have to carry a leather man everyday to make up for that one tool. Like I said, I'm really bummed because I was SO close to my perfect knife.
