Texas Camp Knife!

Some nice examples of Remington reproductions have been posted  Here's a 1924 catalog cut of a similar knife from New York Knife Co Hammer Brand

Here's the one that provided the final inspiration for me. I had been looking for one for a couple of years, and this one turned up at last year's GEC Rendezvous! We had talked about doing it for 2016, and when I handed this to Bill in the fall, it kicked him into high gear also!

It's in nice condition, with good old-style bone handles.

The shield is killer, but copyrighted.

Man, that jigging is killer too Charlie. Any chance Bill will use the same jigging?

Very nice looking knife, Charlie. I love that buffalo shield. It makes sense now why he dug out the bull's head shield for the cattle knife variant.

This is the one that made me crazy too! It's big and not for the faint of heart... I'm not sure a saw would fit in there, it would weigh twenty pounds! After the smaller GEC's I'm happy that these big ones are going to be made!

Does Utica still own the copyright? It's interesting that it's still protected. I don't think that I've seen it on modern knives. They used to use it on a variety of patterns... here's another example of the shield from 1940...

Here's another Utica shield that you don't see often. Would be fun shield for an electrician knife. ;)

I like it, but I'm curious how old that one is. If it's older than, say, the mid-1940s, then I'd be curious to know if it was used much after WWII, given the similarity to the SS insignia.

Everybody in America, and many people elsewhere, have heard of Texas-sized items, referring of course to the biggest state in the continuous United States!
Large camp knives were made by a few old cutleries, and they proved to be very useful tools when the going got tough.
I have been discussing this up-coming project with Bill at GEC for some time now - at least a couple of years, but we think the time has come!

These are preliminary drawings. We've pretty much settled on the blades, but there were of course other variations in older days.
The opener will cut the top from a can, and will pop a crown top from a beer or a soda. The punch is a new/old design, never used in my HJs before - hmmmmmmm. . . . . .
Anyway, I hope you don't have to scroll side to side! This is a big'un!!

If you have an old one please post it, and please tell me what you think of this one!!
The trend lately has been toward one-blade knives, because of portability, and because of cost - and possibly because we don't cut pen-points any more!:D This one bucks the trend in many ways!!

P.S. the deadline for this knife to appear is the first week in April at the Oregon Knife Show!
Here's hoping all goes well!

Are you going to use both shields or just pick one?

Glad you like it, SP!;)

We are going to try for some good jigging like that which is on the Utica!

On the copyright question, Bill is very cautious about that issue. He has a severe allergy to lawyers (with due respect to our lawyer friends here!!).:D
Some of you might remember Bill turned down a verbal agreement to use the "Redneck" brand, sacrificing some expensive tooling in the process!

Waynorth please, please keep the punch and bail, utility and visual appeal as well. i use my punches all the time. i'd heard(read somewhere) that gec was going away from stainless, but if that's the case this would be an excellent farewell note:) as far as the bail, that's just, well essential for a camp knife. try to think camp knife away from this discussion, and i would wager lots of folks would picture a knife with a bail or ring ,whatever. either way, this knife will be fantastic! thanks, Neal70 p.s. does anyone happen to know the model name and number for the camillus used in the comparison shots on page 1 by thawk? thanks

Dangit.... the size has kept me happily at bay on this knife, but if there is some good jigged bone..... I might break.

The Camillus Classic Cartridge Series CCC-7 and the Reminton 4243R are the same knife with different cosmetics.
