The “Can’t leave anything alone” Thread

Basic blue ano, with a matte finish after I stripped the bare TI with some Whink.

There was a blemish which can barely be seen on the show-side scale near the back end (above image).

It looked kinda cool after the first run, but I used the whink and it made it disappear for the 2nd even color ano.

Really liking the Smock.

I still have some finishing work when I get home. I'll have to put the final 320/400 grit finish on the now vast blade section where the flipper tab once lived (and even up the facets I put in it), Along with honing the burrs off the edges.

All in all I am happy.

Great job Dr.Matt

So I started out just wanting to round the scale edges and get rid of the pointy little corners. This particular Micarta with its relatively smooth but grippy texture showed that modification much more than I'd like. So then I went full-on "battle worn" with one of my wife's emery boards. That didn't look right either so I started working my way out with uneven sanding to 1200 grit. The effect closely approximates a decade or more of daily use and incidental pocket buffing.

It feels absolutely wonderful in hand but was a little slick with very dry fingers. I'm curious to see how I like it in the long term.

Ok, took some more pics. Nothing major here, just cosmetic: Natural micarta scales (RGT) dyed Tropical Teal, patina on the Maxamet blade, and flamed hardware.

A couple things worth noting:
I've heard reports of red Loctite in these, however I can confirm that mine definitely had blue. It wasn't too hard to get apart, used a piece of leather to grip the free-spinning backspacer, and used the bit driver slid between the scales and liner trick to remove the scales from the lanyard tube.

Also, I happened to notice when I had it apart that much of the hardware (all screws, barrel spacer, and lanyard tube) were not magnetic, so perhaps they are titanium. I still went ahead and flamed them rather than electro-ano, because it was such a small job and because flamed worked well for the look I was going for. Still, I thought it was worth mentioning because they sell alot of aftermarket Ti for these.

Another small project, nothing to the level of much of the greatness in this thread, but still fun to share. I took the white Rex 45 Native 5, dyed it purple, flamed the hardware, and what I'm really happy with is the forced patina. I used mustard mixed with apple cider vinegar. I made it a little thinner than I normally do so it would run, applied it with a toothpick in random patterns, then left it hanging from a pencil in a mason jar letting it drip down. Let it sit for a half hour, rinse, repeat. I lost count of how many rounds, but I'd say 5-7.
