The 121 Old and New

On my Swiss gun calipers, all my 121s measure .072 at the tang stamp, even the point up read tang. FYI. 300Bucks

PS At this moment I am not thinking Salmon....actually heating the oil in the fish fryer and getting ready to fry GOLD....7 Kansas Bobwhites. I ain't sharing, don't ask. In this day an situation a wild quail dinner just about tops everthing in rarity. Well, actually I would let Hawkeye have one if he would bring those Crappie filets he caught last week.........

Pictures???? ;)

The ones on page one of thread....300

Oh yeah......I forgot.

:o

These 121s sure do have a lot of variations in the blades. Shape, width, length......seems like somebody was constantly tinkering with the design.

Fascinating knife.

Although posted in another thread, I thought that to make this thread complete I should post the last 121 that was made by BUCK. It is a 2005 121 scaler. I might add that the knife is due to the kindness of HKINGDOM who sold to me.

And for those of you who are interested in thickness, recall that the Spine Stamp BUCK scaler measured .056 in thickness. This 2005 scaler measures in at a whopping .118, more than double the original scaler. Needless to say, there ain't much flex.

Well, that should beat the 121 scalers to death once and for all.

Telechronos:):):)

I think we should keep discussing models like these as new guys come in and express interest in this area . It does have a varied history and many of you guys have great photos to show these changes . This is one I don't tire of discussing . Thanks guys . DM

This has been an interesting thread for me. I thought I had a 121, but after pulling it out of the safe it is actually a 105-I think called the pathfinder? I broke out my old gunsmithing starrett micrometer, and the blade goes 0.117 from the handle to just before the false edge on the top of the tip which is about an inch long. The blade on mine is 5", it has 3 lines
Buck

U.S.A.

How long is the blade on the 121? is it maybe 5.5"?
The two models are just very close to my eyes.:)

I just re-read this thread.
Thank you all that participated and provided various pictures.
It is clear to me that the 121 is still a popular knife and maybe if we are lucky maybe it comes back in a micarta handle and a premium steel.

May I suggest the "Sportsman Pack"
121, 103, & 102 in S30V, bone spacers, and micarta handles.
in a side by side leather sheath for the 121 and 103 with the 102 stacked on the 121.

How does that sound guys?? :)

To me the 121 and 103 would make a excellant choice for a twin knife set . Add some features like a lanyard hole and micarta handles and it should be a good set . I wouldn't be very picky on the steel . DM

Well, I finally got a Guide.

Been looking for several years and haven't been able to find a real nice example of a later one. In fact, there are not many guides around.

Now I can finally do some hands on comparing with the older models and see the differences. I still need to get hold of one c. 1990 and one with a scaler and then I'll have a pretty good idea of the evolution of the knife.

I may have to grab one of the fancy buff ones they're offering this year if they put it on the website.

Well look at you.Glad you got it.

Now you need some deer meat to try her out on.:D

Thanks.

I'm talking to Larry about one of the fancy new buff ones, too.

I guess I'm becoming a 121 collector.

:)

Nice Edge!! I've two Guides from the late 90's. Frankly, the edge geometry makes them better slicers than the Fisherman from the 80's and 70's. Both are great knifes.

Time for you to bone out a deer. g

:)

I'm thinking I've shot my last deer. I hunt a lot, but what I'm hunting is knives and other sporting collectibles.

Funny how chasing trophy collectibles can satisfy your hunting urges.

:D

"what I'm hunting is knives and other sporting collectibles"

I hear you Edge. Your comment reminds me when I finished graduate school and took a job with a small oil comany in my home town. I had not hunted during my last few years and I didn't join a club that first fall (no free land hunts in the deep south except National Forests).

So I'm sitting around on night at the Corner Bar (after 1st gun season) with all my old buddies who never left town, who were always gone during opening week. My buddy Mark says to me "why aren't you hunting this fall?" I smiled and said "I am hunting all those lilly white tails that seem to come out all over town during opening week!!"

That got some pinched looks and nervous laughter.

Yeah......there's hunting and there's hunting, but it's all hunting and it's all fun and some is more fun than others.

:)

I think this 121 I got should be an example of the last year they were "officially" made......at least I hope it is. You never know 'til they arrive and even if it's a 2000 model......you never know what Buck might have done that will surprise you.

I've been looking for an older 121 in some what good condition. Waiting for this one to arrive ;)
