The 121 Old and New

I've been looking for an older 121 in some what good condition. Waiting for this one to arrive ;)

Chris D. :D

It's hard to see the knife in detail but if it's condition is the same as the sheath you have a nice knife.

That looks like it will be a good one, all right.

Anybody who might be interested in the history of the 121 should also take a look at this link below........

And if Joe has gotten bored enough to be looking in........any comments you can make are welcome.

:)

I think we have some things narrowed down.......like:

1984, last year as the 121 Fisherman catalog #184
1985, first year as the 121 Guide catalog #184
2000, vanished from Buck catalog.

But we can always use more input........still lacking some things from the early years of the 121, I'm sure.

This guy told me he thinks there were a pair of these among the old stock.

I didn't take him up on it because my 121 search will be focused on the opposite end of the chronological order now.

Ok, now that I have the brand new 2010 Buffalo Guide 121 and the 2000 Guide 121 I've been able to do some measurements on blade thickness.

Yes, the new one is nothing less than humongous in thickness compared to the rest of them.....I suspect it was made with a 105 blade trimmed to the required 5.5 inches.

It is......however, beautiful.

So......blade thicknesses by model in the 121s I now own.

The new Buff .115
2000 Model .077
Three-Line .078
Older Three-Line .078
Two-Line .060
Older Two-line .051

Must add that Telechronos said his older model with the scaler was .056 earlier in the thread. Don't know why I'd have a later model at .051, but that's what I got.

I took these quickly and the Buff was hard to measure with the chipflint top, but they should be accurate within a few hundreths. I don't have a real professional micrometer.

The handles got thicker and bigger, too.....as you can see from this old picture.

I'm still going to pick up a '90 model or thereabouts and eventually a real early one with the scaler.

And then maybe a few more just for fun.

;)

And maybe we should add that Joe just sold a 1 of 1 on the Bay for ..... I think it was $216.

Nice new cherrywood with scaler.

Congrats on a fat price, Joe. (Maybe it was a bargain, who knows?)

:D

Examining earlier parts of this thread, you will note that I have quite a few 121s. My collection stops when the date stamps appear but does include the 2005 1 of 20. I just could not let this one get by. Maybe it is a fat price, but fortunately, there was one just before me that thought the "fat Price" was almost as good.

Telechronos:):):)

Yeah.....that was me.

I'm leaning toward thinking you got a bargain, what with the letter of authenticity and all......

And you sure as hell got bragging rights in spades!!!

That ended kind of early in the afternoon on a Tuesday and I think it might have gone higher at a better time.

Well done, I'd say.

Does anyone think the BCCI should contract this knife to be built?????
I'm in for sure!!!

I'm IN!!!

Only.......the reason there's only one of these is that production failed miserably.

:eek::eek::eek:

Which is another reason it was a good deal.......there will never be another!!!

Plus, it's an IDAHO stamp.....which I like.

Darn.....Mr. Chronos beat me by $3.......

Course, his max bid may have been $300, who knows?

:D

Guess you didn't see the auction, Flat....

The knife was recently made at the Buck Knife factory in Post Falls Idaho. The story is that the run was to be 13 knives in total but 11 of them did not survive the buffing equipment in the shop so only 2 were ever sold. This is the 3rd one so its existance needs to be explained. As it turns out, before they attempted to make the 13, they made one as a sample. The sample was made, it looked great, so they proceeded to try to make the 13.

This sample knife was boxed up and forgotten until recently. It is offered for sale with a new 121 stamped holster style leather sheath, the box and paperwork shown, and a letter of authenticity from Buck, explaining how the knife came to be. This really is a nice knife and it is absolutely brand new, never used or sold until now.

I guess I misunderstood this......looks like it's 1 of 3???

Wonder who's got the other two????

Oh......of course......got to be Plumberdv!!!

:)

I'm very heart broken that Buck can't run the 121 anymore!! WTF has happened to the production process????

Sounds likely.

So at least they could make us some nice handled 121s.......just without the scaling notches.

:) (nodding)

Come on, Buck!!!

That could be Earl... because my cloth wheels will grab a blade at odd times and it doesn't have scaller . I would purchase one as well .DM
