The 2011 NEWBIE KITH

A ruling/request was made that due to my use of a blade other than one made by myself that I withdraw from the newbie KITH. I am advancing into stock removal and heat treat so I'll keep my eyes on next year.

I thought the use of blanks was accepted as long as you did your best to make it better than it was to start...ie: filework, exceptional handle material, mosaic pins, etc.

I don't see a problem with someOne int the "newbie" kith using a blank, if thats the kind of blade your using to learn the trade than so be it. As long as theyre putting all the effort forth they can. Mine is forged but who's to say that's better than anyone elses.

Just to add an opinion on the factory blade thing.

The KITH theme is a hand made knife.
If this was an art exhibition, and you bought a picture and framed it, would you feel that it was OK to enter it as your art work.
The same goes for a pre-made blade. It is what makes a knife a knife. A pretty handle is nice, but it is the blade that is what you are learning how to make.
If the blade is not all that well finished, and you made it yourself, fine - that is your KITH entry.
No matter how stunning it may be, if you bought it - it isn't your work, and does not belong in a hand made knife KITH.

To sum it up:
Buy a canvas and paint a picture = your art work
Buy a canvas with a painting on it = not your art work
Buy a bar of steel and make a knife = your knife work
Buy a bar of steel already shaped into a knife = Not your knife work.

I would love to, but I don't know if my stuff is up to that level yet. Check out the couple knives that i've posted and let me know.

I'll have to drop out of this one. All my equipment is currently boxed up for the move. I got an awesome job offer, so unfortunately all my shop hobbies are on hold for probably the next 6 months, unless I can find some shop space to rent in Atlanta. /rant off :D
