The 2024 F**** K****?

Times.... I received this email in 2016 from the late Bob, the GEC dealer, regarding the Waynorth Texas Camp knife. In it he was letting me know that that knife was expected to be quite expensive, for the day. It was a limited SFO of a complicated pattern.
Here is a small part of it:
" If you want a Texas Camp Knife .... will be in two colors of Jigged Bone, Antique Yellow and Cranberry Red......
Also these knives will be expensive, probably around $150.00 USD and BIG at 4 7/8 inches closed
."

The actual price, after the knives were at the store, was a bit higher, 189USD. A big amount for a GEC in them days....
I could have, however, bought a couple as they were not as popular then, and the cost was not helping...

So, whether 250 is a lot for a similar size/style GEC knife in 2024 is debatable.
$189 in 2016 is worth $247.35 in todays money.

Given the information available up to August 31, 2024, and considering the inflation rate from 2016 to 2024, $189 in 2016 would be worth approximately $247.35 in today's money. This calculation assumes an average inflation rate of 3.44% per year, which results in a cumulative price increase of about 31.05% over those eight years.

However, for precise current value, especially considering the date is August 31, 2024, and if there's been any significant economic event or change in inflation rates recently, you might want to check the most current inflation data or an inflation calculator that updates in real-time with the latest CPI data. But based on the general trend and the data up to mid-2024, $189 from 2016 would have roughly the purchasing power of $247.35 in 2016

Knives are weird. Some aren’t too popular when they first are released, then become so later on. Stockman patterns never seem to go out of style though… going rate for a 66 is $300 +, same with #35s and #81s. 82s are a little more accessible.

Obviously I can’t say I’m thrilled with the price but it’s not completely beyond the pale for a big, slightly complicated knife, judging by the trend these days. It’s just about at the limit of what I’m comfortable paying, however.

Yea I totally agree, in my first post I said I clarified that I meant immediate resale, not down the road. I could certainly see this bad boy going up in value over time.

My guess is based on the fact that it is a big, somewhat complicated knife at a fresh high in prices. I just don’t see it being the average persons cup of tea. I know it’s not mine, this will be the first forum knife in about 6 years that I won’t be purchasing, not an huge deal in the grand scheme of things. Again, I’d be happy to eat crow on my prediction.

No it isn't.
The Case Classic 340 pattern from 1997, which Bill Howard undoubtedly was very familiar with and probably had a significant role in its production, is the exact same knife. There were about a dozen variations, and the bone handle versions seem to be selling somewhere around the $250 mark right now.

Being that it's near impossible to obtain a GEC unless it's being flipped on the secondary, I'd say 250 bucks for an exclusive being made for our community is a drop in the bucket.

Especially if it helps out Kevin financially (and I hope it does), since he keeps the lights on for us to have this place to gather and share our common interests.

This place is therapeutic for some*.

😁

*by some, I mean me.

IMO it’s 97.8% just the inherent FOMO of limited release things. You buy a knife you think you’ll like, or in case you might like it and it may be hard to find later, then you find that because everyone else is doing the same thing, “boy howdy sure enough, that was a good investment.” For some then (no judgment but it’s a slippery slope) it becomes tempting to do it on patterns they don’t personally like, which further heats up the market. It’s also legitimately fun to horse trade and try new knives, and nobody wants to be the one who is realistically out $10 after a catch-and-release, when it feels like everyone else made $10.

But really, $250 seems a fair price for a cool knife and I personally didn’t hesitate for more than about 15 seconds before putting in my pre-order. I’ll enjoy the knife because I’ve personally been hoping to try a GEC take on a big stockman for a long time. Whether this one is TOO big remains to be seen. I guess we’ll find out in a few months!

Wow, 15 seconds was a bit generous. I maybe blinked once, if at all, before hitting buy now... 😂

(I know the next guy is going to say he "ordered when he was still a dream in his momma's eye as she walked 15 miles in a snowstorm to school as a kid")

I ordered way back when the only thing sharp as a blade was a rock, and the guy dreaming it up was still a spark in his caveman dad's eye, while his mom was out hunting dinner with nothing but her wit and a pointy stick!

My grandma told us she had to walk to school. Many years ago we visited her childhood home in Pennsylvania. I wish I could remember where it was. Really cool little house and area. We drove up and around the mountain road where the house was down on the right, around the curve up and above her old home and past the school. The school that was approximately 800 to 1000 feet past the house. Lol. I told her, grandma! I could have CRAWLED to school!

Thank you for showing us the way.
After reading your superb, fact based explanation I now understand that I was saying it was too expensive, without knowing it. My apologies to you, kind sir.

Our walk to school was about a 1/2 mile I think, maybe 3/4 miles, but it felt like 10 miles when I was in the 5th and 6th grade.

I was just looking at some threads from 2017. The exact same conversations about prices. Nothing has changed. Same story, different year.
It’s the human condition to be dissatisfied.
My father, a former Army Lieutenant, was once told that if the soldiers are complaining about the food, you know everything’s okay. They’re going to complain about something, so better hope it’s relatively trivial.

In our case, if you have one guy rage quit the forums due to the price of the Forum Knife, you know everything is just ducky.
