The Anvil Shed, The spot to shoot the breeze.

a build out? Is that like the custom shop? I like the look of the suretouch handle. Is it more tacky for better grip?

A "Build Out" model is a model not found in the catalog, but built by the normal production process, not the Custom Knife Shop. As best I know there are two types of build outs:
1. A Dealer Special Order: A dealer asks for a special run and Buck builds it "to spec." The recent 192 Vanguard with Micarta Handles for Smokey Mountain Knife Works is an example of this type of "Build Out."
2. A Factory Build Out: Buck takes left over parts from other projects or from discontinued items and combines them to "use up" the spare parts. The Blue, 110 Slim with an S30V blade, currently available as "Web Special" is an example of this type. It uses the now discontinued 110 Blue Slim Select Frame and combines it with blades from the now discontinued 110 Slim Pro TRX.

Build outs always have the letters "BO" as part of their full model number.

Has not been updated in a while, but this post provides a list of older Build Out Models: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/build-out-list.1678727/

My 116 is an example of a "Factory Build Out" using left over 116 blades from an earlier project and left over SureTouch handles from some tests Buck did with that material. SoureTouch is very "grippy" as a material as it combines G10 with Rubber. The currently available Stealth Run #11, the 119, uses it. Here is the manufacturer's page on SureTouch: https://www.ultrexcomposites.com/suretouch/

Thanks.

DrMegabyte DrMegabyte That is a sweet little knife. May I ask where you obtained said blade?

Interestingly 432 Stealth Run SureTouch/Cru-Wear 119s remain for sale. Surely, at some point, Buck will offer them at a discount.

I'm thinking those SMKW 192's were parts left over from the LE 192 from the previous year that didn't sell well.
Heck it's the same knife, different blade steel.

Typically a lot of the buildouts were from left over parts. Buck doesn't waste anything.

I've always thought knives build to order were considered SFO's. I need to check if those had "BO" part numbers.

I didn’t want to start a new thread so I will ask here, is there much difference in carrying and use between the 501 and 503? I have a buck 55 which is a little small, similar to the 503 size, so I figured the 501 would be a little bigger than the 55 and 503. Am I making too much about the slight size difference between the 501 and 503? Anyone have a pic of both side by side? Thanks for letting me go on, just wondering as I playing with my BUCK 112 grooved handle I got for Christmas.

I don't have a 503, but here's a 55 with a 501 if that helps.

Thanks, that is helpful as it gives me the size of the 501 compared to the 55 I have. It says the 55 blade is 2.3 and the 501 2.5, so a little longer and the overall size of the 501 is a little bigger….. and a drop point of course. Thanks for the pics, now maybe I should get the 501 in magnacut or a higher end steel. 420hc is still good too, but just try a little more variety.

For the most part, I'm a light user these days so 420HC is fine. That said, the one in the pic is S35vn :)

If you are a BCCI member the annual club knife is a 501. Burgundy micarta, brass, and s30v.

Didn’t they just come out with a 105 with a 4 inch blade? Saw it online somewhere so thought it had to be an error.
