The Apocalypse happens!!! What knife are you taking???

Things you can't do with a small blade during the Apocalypse!

I think I'd add this to the: things that 99.9% of all people on this planet can't do with any blade during, or not during the apocalypse.

Small and large knives are a great combo. I never choose just one. It is just so easy to carry 2 knives a smaller one and then a larger one, the small one around my neck and the bigger knife on my hip or in my pack, add in a multitool and you are good to go.

Yep, agreed!

This combo for me. But I still would be dead. :D

@singularity
Nice. Is that a visayan barong? How long is it (>25")? Whom did you have it made from?

Thanks, it's called a "dahong palay". It's actually a regional design from Luzon. I don't know the blacksmith's name(he sold through a middleman) but he made a bit of a splash in the local forums until he started charging a lot more when he got popular. Apparently he priced himself out of the market because I don't see his products anymore. It really is a well-balanced chopper that really feels lively and is great for work or FMA.

If it is the 2nd Coming, I'm not all that concerned about what knife I'm carrying.

As for any other bad situation, probably an ESSE Junglas and a mora.

Yea definitely my junglas, its also the only large blade i have at the moment.

Really and truly, if the apocalypse happens I'd prefer not to be here to witness it. It's not going to be a walk-in-the-park, if you know what I mean. Every man for himself just to get something to eat and drink daily. No thanks. I will not last too long in this scenario, as I'd bet most of us would not. More than likely, I'll just stay right where I am at the time, and when things get too uncomfortable, swallow one and move on. I do not think what knife we have on us will matter one bit.

I kinda agree that i would rather pass on in this case, but i am not sure the whole "instincts for survival would let me"

So jump out of the shower and you only have time to grab one knife, which one?

My Condor Barong, Its sheath can be refashioned into a banana hammock while I am running around naked and afraid wearing only charcoal smears otherwise.

Which is why I said, when things get too uncomfortable. Once some pain and suffering sets in, those instincts may no longer work. When you've not had any water for days on end, and the water you did have was bad, due to people pissing and pooping in the supply. When you've not had anything to eat, save for some bugs you managed to scrounge up. When your suffering from one of the many nasty diseases that will make a come back with vengeance once all the things we take for granted no longer work.

Anyone ever read One Second After?

The US is hit by an EMP device. In one years time, the population of the US goes from over 300 million to less than 30 million. Mostly due to lack of food, water, disease and gang activity. Also a lot of self check outs, once the suffering got too bad. Most all of it is backed by what the EMP Commission found in their research on the subject. They wrote a huge report on the findings. On page 45, first paragraph, they quoted "at that point, society as we know it couldn’t exist within large regions of the
Nation".

It's a real good look at what life will be like without all the things we take for granted. I recommend it for you armchair survivalists. ;-)

t is not possible to precisely predict the time to restore even minimal electrical service
due to an EMP eventuality given the number of unknowns and the vast size and complexity of the system with its consequent fragility and resiliency. Expert judgment and
rational extrapolation of models and predictive tools suggest that restoration to even a
diminished but workable state of electrical service could well take many weeks, with
some probability of it taking months and perhaps more than a year at some or many locations; at that point, society as we know it couldn’t exist within large regions of the
Nation.
The larger the affected area and the stronger the field strength from the attack
(corollary to extent of damage or disruption), the longer will be the time to recover.
Restoration to current standards of electric power cost and reliability would almost
certainly take years with severe impact on the economy and all that it entails.

It'd be the same with me. I'm a diabetic, and need insulin to live. Sure, I always have it on hand, but when my own supply runs out, what then? Even if I successfully raided a drug store or something, what then? I get enough to maybe last me a year? What happens after that? Insulin needs to be refrigerated, so after a few months with no power, raiding drug stores is no longer an option even if they haven't already been stripped clean. Even if I manage to continually find food and water without issue and manage to avoid getting killed by other people looking for the same things, my time is inherently limited.

In the book, One Second After that I cited above your post, diabetics are some of the first casualties after an EMP strike. Not including airline passengers who will truly be the first, when the power is out nation wide, like you said, WHAT THEN? Most all of the people in the nation who live on some sort of borrowed time due to modern advances in medicine, will perish when the lights go out. It's sad but true, society as we knew it 150 years ago could not keep a lot of them alive.

Not saying an EMP strike is likely. but that is one of the reasons we do not want North Korea and Iran having nucular (mis-spelling intentional) power. I think it's too late now.

Be a toss up between my VTAC and sk-5 kukri. I would love to take my 20 inch HI AK but its just way too heavy. I suppose it would be the VTAC, just because it performs as a tool just as well as it does a weapon. Not only that but its stood up to more abuse than any other blade I own, and I own a ton of edged weapons and enjoy exploring their limits. During an apocolyptic type senerio, the most durable blade/tool, that came in a lightweight, small framed package would be highly desirable. May not totally fit the question as its not a knife but I would definately grab the ATC-VTAC.

If it's truly the second coming, id bring "the king", just to present The Lord with a proper knife.
