The Ashokan Gladius Challenge......

Quote:"...and with that, I'll refrain from mentioning the OBVIOUS phallic similarities demonstrated by Mace's rough-forged sword."

And yet....you do it so well.

But, there is no denying this fact....the Romans were well known for phallic symbolism. I must be expressing my Italian side.:D

Larry, I would just like to say WOW that freakin looks great!:D
It's like 100 times better that it's a forged blade! At least your not a big cheater....like Matt and Paul.
Really looks great Larry....can't wait to see it.
Macemus

Macemus,

I have to admit, you cleaned up the cutting torch lines pretty good with the hand grinder :D Just joking, looks like a formidable weapon! I yelled uncle the other day when I ended up with a miniature version....

I'm out of the running... pretty nasty warping during heat treat, and there will be no time between then and now to fool with it.

...guess I'll just have to beat you at thumbwrestling again, Mace!

Looks good, btw, bro!

Matt, That stinks! You better bring it anyway so we can all point and laugh!:D
(maybe I shouldn't have said that...mine is not heat treated yet:o)
(you can always cut it in half and make two "really" short swords!);)

I wonder how straight and true real historical swords are.......I have not had the opportunity to handle many originals and have often wondered about this.

It's hard enough to keep one edge straight....seems like it's ten times harder with two edges.
My guess is that a lot of warped and "un-straight" blades went into battle and no one ever thought twice about it.

If any sword makers or collectors have any input on this...please feel free to post your thoughts on the subject.

Hope to have mine heat treated by this weekend....
Keeping my fingers crossed!:D
Macemus

Matt.....Just a thought...but, how about making a "practice" sword out of wood? Just don't heat treat it!;)

Looking good guys, you better all have them around after ashokan for me to look at myself >_<

Just an FYI , macemus maximus, the latin word for sword and the latin word for penis ... is the same word, gladius. SO yeah, you cant talk about one without talking about the other... literally !

Hoping to put some more steel to the grinder this weekend myself, been out of town and busy many weekends for hte last few months. Maybe i'll work on a gladius of my own even though i'm not going to ashokan, just to practice grinding a double edged shape properly.

okay here my smaller version. I placed it In our oven and I still have a bout an inch to spare..dammn..
Matt that does suck. Mace taht is really nice. Larry I think yours is my favorite so far, wicked pissa. I am hopping my quench plates which are alittle to small will give me good results(PLEASE DONT WARP!!!). By the way its about 13" overall 10" blade 3/16" ATS. (its what I had around the shop,I would have preffered 1/4" and at least 22" blade, but I'm pleased)
PaUL

Paul, that's excellent man! Do you freehand grind, or do you use a rest?

I actually thought about using stainless (if only to irk the bladesmiths), but all I've got laying around is a piece of .200"x2" S30V, and somehow I just can't see wasting a piece that big on this project. Of course, I would have had to send it out for heat treat, and then I'd probably have a short sword for the short sword demo, now, wouldn't I?:mad:;)

Good question about swords being straight and unwarped, Mace. Hopefully someone in the know will chime in... not that it'll do me any good at this point!

...so, we are doing this Roman Gladius-themed Ashokan toga style, right?

Toga!
Toga!
TOGA!

Oh yes! I think Togas are quite in order. I was thinking the same thing!:D
My wife is gonna think I have totaly lost my mind!.....when I ask her to help make a toga!

I talked with Tim at the Ashokan field campus today......he said to let people know if they want to go and have not sent in payment yet just to let him know by this friday(so he can tell the food staff) and you can just sign up and pay when you get there. Very cool!:D

Toga...Toga...Toga...
Macemus

I'll have to throw one together, all this talk about warping and it taking all this time to fix, i might have to show people how a proper HT is done......;). Hopefully i can throw one together really quick for this fun contest thingy, what's the prize and what determines the winner?

Togas? BAH, weren't roman fighter often nude or in just a loincloth? i aM thinking loincloth, oh yeah....... hopefully that thought doesn't make anyone :barf::)

...Larry I think yours is my favorite so far, wicked pissa. .....

Paul, like I was telling Macemus the other day, it looks a whole lot better on film  , but all in all I'm very pleased with it. I work on the grind/file a little every day. I hope to HT (hope it don't warp ) this weekend and then start on the hardware.

I'm getting more physched for Ashokan whenever I start working on this sword! :D

Larrycus

Sam.....Take it easy....lets just stick with togas. We don't want to scare the food staff away!
Macemus

Got my new sword quench tank all welded up. Just a little more file work on the flats...been doing the "grind" by hand.......Hope to get her heat treated this weekend....:D
Pics to follow.
Macemus

Toga.....Toga.....Toga.....

Hmmm...not up on my Latin....but I think I'm first at something.
Stacy,
I think I might use some of that maple you sent me from ole' Bill for a handle instead of on a hawk...if you don't mind...;)....there was just to much good maple in that stick you sent me to carve most of it away for a hawk handle.
Still not sure on a handle......I like to figure that out after the blade is heat treated.
Went to the video store tonight to rent "300" only to find the store was going out of business and had all the movies for sale....first one I saw was "Troy" so I had to get it. Gonna go toss it on the dvd now.
Here are a couple more pics of my blade and new tank.
Mace

Mace, By all means, use the wood as you see fit.
Stacy

BTW, Rough translation - Greetings, how are you today. Mace the great forever. He's number one!

Well, I'm not going to Ashokan :( but here's a short sword (not a gladius) I made last year:

Hopefully I'll get to go next year.

Have fun, everyone who is going. Is someone going to record the lectures?

Deker!!!! What did I ever do to you????:D

Hey, if you keep opening doors, I'm gonna keep walking through them ;) I've been unforseeably out of town for a couple of weeks, so I won't be able to have a gladius done in time...I gotta get in on this SOMEHOW :)

Mace! You screwed up! The fuller is supposed to go on the BLADE, not the VISE!!! :D
