The Ashokan Gladius Challenge......

Well, I'm not going to Ashokan :( but here's a short sword (not a gladius) I made last year:

Hopefully I'll get to go next year.

Have fun, everyone who is going. Is someone going to record the lectures?

Gorgeous, as always from you, Phillip!

Wish you could make it this year... I'd love to get a tip or two on how you finish your handles!

Poor Mace... you never asked for this kind of abuse, and yet now you seem to have a rash of hecklers. What vicious, cruel bastid could have started this landslide rolling? What evil genius lay in wait, cunningly laying snares for our Big Hero to stumble into?

...ah yes, who...

;):D:D:D

Sweet looking blade, as usual my brother! Hope it fares better in heat treat than mine did!

Is there anyone here that's relying on me bringing my big quench tank and Park's #50 to heat treat their swords in at Ashokan? If so, please post here, as it'll be a bit of a chore packing my forge, the quench tank AND 5 gallons of oil, along with all the rest of my stuff (and me!) into my lil' wagon! If I can get away with not bringing it, I won't -- but if enough people need it I'll find a way.

...and Sam, I need no such excuse to be publicly naked, btw...:D:D:barf::barf:

Hehe me neither Matt, but I have to establish an alibi for the police. Maybe a Northeast Nudist Bladesmith's Guild is in need of being organised?

Oh, man... this is going to be a weekend full of mischief and shenanigans!

I SO made the right choice on this instead of the NBA meet this year, while that is AMAZINGLY informative, for some reason most blacksmiths aren't as rowdy as most blademakers, the weirdness though both have more than enough of. :) Mr Vitale, will you have some of that 1084 for sale at the meeting? I think i remember you mentioning it, i would definately be interested in buying some, and saving on the shipping costs. I had talked with Aldo through my teacher Kurt Meerdink, but sadly did not have any money at the time, but do now! Please include some longer bits if you have, perhaps 10 foot lengths of maybe 1/4 inch or thicker if you have it, but no thicker than 5/16ths? Thanks, i look forward to meeting you all and having a blast!

Most bladesmiths are pretty tame too that iv'e met, as long as you keep them away from the Jose Cuervo... It's just mace, matt, grashoppa and his brother in law paul, and that crowd that really gets things going !

Someone needs to make sure to take lots of photos for me since i cant make it. And matt, you should get up to the Mass / RI / CT area more often. All these crazy loons live up my way

Hey Matt, What's that restaurant with all the crap on the walls that you like so much????:D
Mace

wish i could go btu thinking not on the books nor do0 i have a blade for all you steel pounders to see

Sam, as much as threads like this imply that we're a bunch of reckless freeks out to wreak havoc on the locals, it's the furthest from the case. Sure, we like to have a good time, and the chemistry is right among us to equate to a lot of ribbing and teasing, but I (for one) am there to learn!!! I'm pretty sure everyone else is, too.
Ashokan is one of the best knifemaking experiences I've ever had, and I got a total of 7 hours (or so) of sleep between the Wednesday before it to the Sunday it ended, and I still missed WAY more than I'm comfortable with.

As fun as this thread is, I just wanted to make sure that any that might be reading it realize that this is a SERIOUS show, and certainly it's fun, but it's about all things bladesmithing.

Spangler, Mace and myself are really nothing more than a sideshow!:D;)

man this is gonna rock. i can't wait to get up there guys, sleeping in the glove box, seeing matt naked again (hopefully)hanging with all the guys i only see now and then. catching up on old times. gonna be a good damn weekend.

oh yeah and bustin mace's chops

This is the way I had to combat long sword....short forge syndrome.
Got her heat treated last night. Tried to load some pics of the blade but somethings not working.

Pretty cool Macemus, that back to back forge is tricky .

So where are the pics of the HT'ed blade? hope it didn't warp beyond repair

I've just about completed the rough grind and prepare for HT.

Hope it doesn't warp too bad,,,or at all :(

Lary,
She was a little wavy before going in and came out a bit more wavy.
Straightend her out as best I could. Like I said before....one edge is bad enough to keep straight...and two edges compound it ten fold. Back to my theory that a lot of swords must have been like that. A little wavy, but will do the job just the same.
Did the final grind and sharpening today.....she's a real pig sticker!
Still a lot more work to go.
Thinking about a sheath....or just taking the edge off!:D

Larry....we can take the doors off of Matts car and use them for shields!

A lot of swords were so soft they just pounded them straight. At Rc 48-50 it wasn't a risk.
