The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Nathan,
Forgive me if I missed this in a prior post, but does the “BAD MOTHERFUCKER” branding indicate a prototype model only? Has it ever been offered as an option, or any chance that it may be in the future?
I have a feeling it may make the choppers bite a little deeper...

Yeah, it's only on prototypes and first article type stuff, never on a production piece. It started off as a placeholder text to validate the engraving cycle and make the first part (the setup part) stand out from the rest and was often consumed in testing.

New to cpk knives, what is the difference betwen the edc, edc2 and edc3? Is it worth seeking out one of the older versions or are they all quite similar in dimensions and performance? I am looking for 3v steel.

Very briefly as this has been covered throughout the forum.
All have basically the same dimensions.
The EDC2 received slightly thicker stock and thinner scales and the tip was raised and the belly pushed out vs the original. The EDC2 also has a slight “s” grind on the blade.
The EDC3 is essentially the same as the EDC2 but is entirely milled (no “s”) and has a swedge.

The standard steel for all is D3V (CPK’s proprietary heat treat for 3V)
There were a few smaller runs in D2 and 4V.

ETA: welcome to the forum!

Are all the edc knife versions still being produced? Do they all have the stonewashed blade?
AFAIK only the EDC3 is currently being produced. Nathan suggested he was only planning to make a total of 90 before retiring the pattern (at least for a while). Dunno if increased interest will prompt him to make more at this time. There are a lot of other patterns/preorders in the works so capacity is likely to become an issue.
With the exception of a few special runs, stonewashed is the rule (and would be my preference for a user anyway as it barely shows any signs of use).

If I might make a suggestion: if you have the funds, try to snag an EDC3 and an FK2 during the next sales. Both are extremely popular models and I doubt you’d have any regrets. And have a look around the forum (read the thread titles) to make sense of how CPK operates and to understand what is in the pipeline. CPK typically focuses on producing a few models per year and then moves on to other ones.

ETA: See Jo‘s post below regarding availability of EDC2s...
I forgot about that. My bad.

Thanks! That's all very helpful information, I'm glad to be here :)
I am new to CPK, too. You will find all these people here are a great group and helpful. You won’t be disappointed with CPK knives. :)
