The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Is the K18 only possible because of the new Mori?

Is the K18 the max or close to the max of what is possible? (29” length)

Yes and no. The new Mori is a modern high performance super precision mold making machine with a Fanuc with AI Nano High Precision Contour Control capable of milling the bevels with fewer artifacts than our other machining centers. This means we don't need to hand grind the bevels which means this sword doesn't need to cost 3K. That increases the potential size of the run enough to justify producing it.

We could get a little larger, I can get around a 36" part, but 18" will be the longest bevels I've ever milled in this way and will require special fixturing to support the cut.

This has probably been asked and answered before but I'll chance asking again since I missed it ...

And I know ... I have looked at and read charts and the numbers yada yada yada ... but IMHO ... real world use and performance doesn't always read the same charts ... nor play by those "on paper" rules ... so Nathan ...

I was wondering what stainless steel you would be most likely to work with ... and what you think you could get the best all around performance out of?

The two I was actually thinking of are Elmax and AEB-L ... I might be way off ... but I have liked the blades that I have in both steels over other stainless steels I've had much experience with ...

just curious what if any thoughts you had on the subject ... and I totally understand if I just get a weak ... "meh stainless" ...

Thanks - JJ

Don’t know if you’ve seen them, but Nathan has made Utility fighters out of both Elmax and AEB-L. Mike

Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist Are we going to see any more updates or runs of one of the LC versions, 4V perhaps with all the tweaks to blade/handle geometry that have occurred since the pattern was last visited?

not to answer for my bro, but I've got something new in the works which, (if accepted) will fill the void left by the LC quite nicely...

Nice
Nathan, please don't listen to these loony yahoos! :D

Please let 2020 be the year of many smaller CPK patterns and some with thinner stocks for super sliciness (I keep getting autocorrected for spiciness ).
Keep them "BIG" Blades coming:thumbsup:
