The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

It's 3/8" thick. Single bevel. About 7" blade length. Can easily support a person's full weight. Can be used with a fireman's irons.
Any talk of the not-a-katana? I know the k18 took a lot of you fine folks at CPK, so maybe it got nixed? Unfortunately, with 2 kids, many of my knives had to go. But a CPK katana (of sorts) would be a “must have” in my household!

You know, home defense and such….

Nathan, I know the K18 was purpose built for KOD. Was a choil not designed in to reduce it snagging on something?
The design did not benefit from a choil. It was a purpose built competitive racing sword with no concessions to anything unrelated to the race. Ease of sharpening was not a consideration and it is not a design where a user should put his fingers ahead of the guard. Considering this is our largest piece to date, it had relatively thin geometry, and it would be subjected to gross impacts, the decision was made to eliminate the choil.

Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist what is your favorite edge finish?

So far 400 on venev stones and a 6 micron strop is my favorite

With all your competition experience I was just curious!

Thanks!

I don't care about edge finish. Shiny edges do not win races. A fiendishly sharp edge that has no wire edge wins races. You might be surprised to know that the competition choppers that win all the races have the same ugly edge I put on the knives we ship.

Hey Nathan, I saw someone ask about the DEK2. I was curious if you all have produced any of the DEK3s yet, and/or if there’s any picture of when they might be showing up in Friday sales or the website?
The DEK will begin to yield product by the end of this year

The Notta-Katana would more properly be called a Notta-Wakizashi. We're might do another collaboration with Dan Keffeler at some point.

Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist why do you destroy the fixtures after a pattern is retired? I'm curious, is all. Some kind of cathartic ritual?
No, not at all. I normally keep fixtures in case we need to make something or if we decide to revisit a pattern but in the case of the K18 those fixtures were very large and were taking up space and, because there is nothing on this earth that would convince me to ever revisit that pattern again, I opted to scrap them to save room.

Oh, please, please, pretty pleeeeeeeaaaase with sprinkles on top...

A Notta-Wakizashi in the 16" - 22" blade range could/would also serve all the "CPK Machete, please" requests ***nudge, nudge. Wink, wink*** 😉

*** I initially preordered 2 K18s with the thought of being able to
A) have one user, while keeping one pristine
B) try dual wielding them together. Part of the Chinese styles I'd trained in include dual wielding pairs of swords (twin Dao/single edged sabers, and twin Jian/double edged swords).

I'm actually glad I passed one of those K18 spots to someone else, cuz after messing around with 1, the idea of dual wielding K18s is kinda scary. They're amazingly balanced, but different enough from Dao or Jian, that I'm glad I don't have the temptation to try any dual sword forms 😜.

Notta-Wakizashis in the 16" - 22" blade range, OTOH... you'd better believe I'm in for a pair.

Hey, we can call it the "Nathan's: Diesel is Getting Expensive preorder" 😁

What is the final grit that you use (at least for 3V) and do you strop afterwards?

The whole world glorified ninja cosplay for the last few years. Might as well get a weapon to go along with it.

Yes, please.
