The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Oh, please, please, pretty pleeeeeeeaaaase with sprinkles on top...

A Notta-Wakizashi in the 16" - 22" blade range could/would also serve all the "CPK Machete, please" requests ***nudge, nudge. Wink, wink*** 😉

*** I initially preordered 2 K18s with the thought of being able to
A) have one user, while keeping one pristine
B) try dual wielding them together. Part of the Chinese styles I'd trained in include dual wielding pairs of swords (twin Dao/single edged sabers, and twin Jian/double edged swords).

I'm actually glad I passed one of those K18 spots to someone else, cuz after messing around with 1, the idea of dual wielding K18s is kinda scary. They're amazingly balanced, but different enough from Dao or Jian, that I'm glad I don't have the temptation to try any dual sword forms 😜.

Notta-Wakizashis in the 16" - 22" blade range, OTOH... you'd better believe I'm in for a pair.

Hey, we can call it the "Nathan's: Diesel is Getting Expensive preorder" 😁
Yup, put me down for 2 too!

Hey Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist , I have a question. When you start thinking about a new design, what research do you do? Has this process changed since you started making knives?

Edit: Every now and then I kick around ideas of what I’ll do when I retire and sometimes I think of starting a Museum of American Knifemaking. Like, a place makers and enthusiasts could go to see collections of different patterns, historical and modern, and a place to collect more hardcore research materials like manufacturer’s archives. But it occurred to me last night that I don’t actually know how useful it would be for makers.

No, not at all. I normally keep fixtures in case we need to make something or if we decide to revisit a pattern but in the case of the K18 those fixtures were very large and were taking up space and, because there is nothing on this earth that would convince me to ever revisit that pattern again, I opted to scrap them to save room.
Not sure if I should laugh or cry over your answer. Probably both.

Are the Aeb-l UF2s coming soon?
Yes we are working on them now. We only made enough for the pre-order though. I was concerned that we were not going to have the AEBL complete in time but it's looking promising. I'm fairly confident we're going to have the entire pre-order completed on schedule. We may not bring much product to Blade Show, but we're going to get this pre-order done on time.

Hi Nathan have you considered putting short clips of you/ staff grinding, or various part of the knife making process on Instagram?
Those short videos of you and Mark shooting the knife are hilarious.
The tidbits of a sharpened point here and there is cool and I feel like you could get more traffic/ attention easily.

It has a 20" blade and fullers. I had something dumb in mind for the handle but fortunately this was a collaboration with Dan Keffeler and he put the finishing touches on the design and it is correct now. It will be a real weapon that can remove limbs.

"Hmmm. It's closer to what I'm going for...bring in the next subject while I tune the edge."

And for all the folks who've been asking for some kind of CPK Machete, a lightweight, long'ish blade like a Wakizashi makes a great machete for brush and small tree limbs too.
