The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

That whiteboard has made history.
Have you ever considered to use the whiteboard as novelty scale material?
Something like Edge Cut Antique Melamine ? 😁

I guess, since this is technically the "ask Nathan a question" thread, and that is a yes or no question, I can legitimately just answer. Nope.

The folder is a work in process. The material is here, the steel has been decked, the special cutters and tool holders are here. I have some details to finalize in the design and fixturing to design and build. We're going to do these this year and I would love to have some by the Blade Show but that's looking less and less likely...
I know the folder's been discussed in a few different threads, and the following perhaps better suits the "What knife would you like to see next" thread, but since quoted is Nate's most recent post about it, I'll follow on here...

The renderings are terrific. Like many, I EDC a knife for multiple, mostly utilitarian purposes but also defense. Because I spend time in localities where concealed fixed blades are prohibited, folders are near and dear to me.

I'm glad the planned CPK folder is a flipper. With much experimentation, I've concluded that a flipper (assisted or not, both work) is significantly preferred if the folder has a self-defense role. No other opening "system" deploys as easily and consistently one-handed in a variety of situations (entangled, wearing winter gloves, etc.) as a good flipper -- not even an auto.

So yes, flipper please. ;)

Understood this is intended as a folding field knife — a worker — which is great, up to and including the appropriately substantial while still practical 4" blade. In the renderings it looks like the blade shape is similar to the BFK, which is excellent: that's a strong working profile but with enough point to remain a touch stabby. Hope that carries over to the final design; and while the primary goal is certainly that it be robust, also hope the blade geometry and grind will concede just a little to keep it slicy, too.

Hard worker, but still some stabby and slicy, also please.

The UF and DEK are brilliant in blending utilitarian and fighting touches, such that they serve several roles well — especially ergonomically — with very little compromise to different tasks. A CPK folder that does the same is incredibly desirable.

Rounding out: aggressive scales or frame texturing, again please; jimping if possible.

And lastly: a configurable clip option that includes right hand, tip down carry. Versatility in lefty or righty, up or down carry is a terrific trait in a folder and too few offer it these days.

I love and prefer fixed blades for nearly all tasks, but they aren’t always an option. There’s a perennial type of thread at this and several similar forums where an OP — usually a young fellow just enlisted — seeks advice on what monster knife he should buy before heading off to boot camp or first deployment. Invariably, those with there-and-back-again credentials collectively and strongly suggest (usually to the consternation of the OP) forgoing the big blade and instead securing a quality multitool and good folder.

It’s the right advice. When the CPK folder comes around, the advice can be amended to “a quality multitool and a GREAT folder.”

Hello Tilo Barh! Welcome and thanks for joining us here.

The K18 was a pre-order with extras made to cover eventualities and is not a standard pattern. It ended up being a difficult and time consuming pattern that we won't make more of, but there are still a few that will be finished out and sold on the Friday sales as time allows. We will also bring a couple to the Atlanta Blade Show in a few weeks. We will not revisit the pattern again in the future and make more in the future, I've already discarded the fixtures, it is off-the-table. Once these are gone I never want to see them again, but there are probably a dozen remaining that will finish out when I can get the time to work on them.
If you did it over again, what would/could you change to make it, or something like it, easier to produce? Hint, hint...
