The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

I wonder how many people bought them that have no experience and training in proper wielding techniques for double edged swords?

I get there’s an element of danger involved when learning or trying something out like this for the first time, I’d hope some responsibility would come into play, just like taking someone shooting for the first time, teaching someone to ride a motorcycle, attaching them to you and going skydiving, hell, teaching someone to drive a car is pretty damn dangerous without a little talk and instruction.
I grew up in the 70/80's.... I've watched almost every ninja movie around.... So it's safe to say I've got a fair amount of experience.....
Even still, I would Never even think of buying That thing!!! I Know it would kill me.... I just know it.

Now, if there was a single edge version. I don't really care which edge? Then I'd be happy.

I somewhat considered dulling the top edge until I was more used to handling it - but I also thought that that might be a travesty toward the intent of the K-18, and to Nathan’s fine work.

I just make sure that I’m fully awake and move, as much as possible, with focus, awareness, and contentiousness - at least for my muddled mind. No limbs damaged so far, and much fun. Mike

Just put tape on the back edge , won't harm the K18 and you don't have to worry about the second edge !

Nathan, are all your D2 blades (specifically skinner and EDC1) spray form (PSF27) or are some models D2 and others PSF27?

I get that it’s the same but different. Just curious.

ETA - And have you ever tried CPM-D2? Or is it cost prohibitive for D2?

The carbide type, shape and distribution in D2 make the alloy well suited for cutting hide as a skinning knife.

The carbides in CPM D2 are small and rounded and don't behave the same way in the application.

Hi Nathan. Can you give us an idea about when the Shiv pre order will be opened?

Also visuals on the pattern for the semi integral dagger?
Will this be released 5 at a time or in larger orders?
Cost?
The DEF in the last few sales looked like a 25% increase in cost from the pre order, will the blade’s released next year have a similar price increase/ can you tell us the anticipated prices of the blades to be released?
Thanks.

The price increases will be aligned with the increase in my costs for abrasives, carbide, steel and even labor. We have seen about a 20 to 25% increase in this year alone.

The Shiv is going to be an expensive knife.

I don't want a situation like the K20 where there were only a hundred and people weren't able to get what they wanted in a leisurely time frame. On the other hand I don't want to be stuck with an order for 500 of them and that's all we do next spring. We have an awful lot of ground to cover and I don't need a complex bottleneck like the Shiv corking up the works. I'm leaning towards maybe 300 for the pre-order? Does that sound reasonable?

I guess that depends on how many of us will be ordering for our entire boy scout troops. 300 could get eaten up in a hurry 😁.

There was a time when 300 units would've lasted maybe a whole weekend but that was like back in 2017-18! You have lotsa more active participants these days than just your average type lurkers. If this would not create extra work for Jo, which it will making things more confusing, you ought to consider limiting one per person per post and then allow multiple claims posts, but again, lotsa work to tie up extra orders.

Since this is ANAQ thread, in that spirit: will you consider offering the fanciful type of options like with the UF/DEF preorders? Or would that create too much bottleneck?
