The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

The pig sticker (aka Shiv) pre-order provides as one option: "Lengthwise satin ground by NTM."

Who or what is an NTM?

Of course being told by Nathan not to order this makes me 100 peercent convinced that I M

UST order this. Like the button that says "Do Not Push." Otherwise, I'd probably never think of ordering this pricey option.

Still, I guess I'd kinda like to know what I'm going to get for those five Benjamins.

Nathan? Anyone?

TIA!
Nathan The Machinist, he will do the lengthwise satin finish as opposed to Mark doing his satin finish.

Thanks! I first read it as NTC and thought it meant he was doing it, and wondered what his middle initial "T" stood for. Then I looked again and saw that it actually was NTM, and I was too stupid to figure it out.

Anyway, at least now I know that his middle name is "The." 🤣

The lengthwise grind on this pattern in this material is difficult. The A2 ground easily but 5-10% of the surface of D3V is vanadium carbide (harder than silicon carbide, right up there close to diamond) so it doesn't cut, even with ceramic belts. It's not easy to get a clean grind on that much area in CPM 3V for the lengthwise grind technique. I'm the only one in the shop who can do it and it's a bear and I don't want to do it but Matty said throw a number at it and I did. I don't recommend it, it's a lot of money for what?

Sorry Eric, I'll have to veto that one.

Asked and answered. 🤣

Yeah that would be ridiculous wouldn't it?
Yep.

But it wouldn't be my most ridiculous (or expensive) knife purchase by a long shot. If you want to spend really ridiculous money on a knife, you need to go to the Art Knife Invitational sometime. Been there; done that. Several times.

Anyway, compared to what it's about to cost me to eliminate a mold problem in my kitchen, right now it seems damn cheap.

Plus, how often does one get the pleasure of making someone else do something that they really, really, REALLY don't want to do, for only five hundred smackers? 🤣

Can I get the satin on just one side, and just one wood handle, so I can take cool pics and save some money

Yeah, I was planning to make Matty's like that (but with a lead blade) so I can give you the matching scale. Do you have a preference for which side? I can just leave the other side unmachined.
