The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Yeah that would be ridiculous wouldn't it?

Sorry Nathan, but I will gladly pay to see those angelic talented hand rub a bear resulting in a really exquisite piece for my future heirloom. At the rate which I've been placing lately in sales / preorders, I may as well kiss the idea of an Integral Dagger or Integral Shiv bye-bye! One of the Shivs will be loaded to the hilt (750 + 500 + 325 + 150 + 15 + 13 = $1753 so TAV is correct).

Yeah, I was planning to make Matty's like that (but with a lead blade) so I can give you the matching scale. Do you have a preference for which side? I can just leave the other side unmachined.
No preference. We can press them together like those necklaces that are like two halves of a heart.

Yep.

But it wouldn't be my most ridiculous (or expensive) knife purchase by a long shot. If you want to spend really ridiculous money on a knife, you need to go to the Art Knife Invitational sometime. Been there; done that. Several times.

Anyway, compared to what it's about to cost me to eliminate a mold problem in my kitchen, right now it seems damn cheap.

Plus, how often does one get the pleasure of making someone else do something that they really, really, REALLY don't want to do, for only five hundred smackers? 🤣
the year I went, one of Michael Walker's folders went for somewhere around $60K😲

Since the Shiv won the first choice poll and is the last preorder of this year, does that mean that the EDC winning the second choice poll (and was my first choice) get to be the first preorder of the new year? I've been combing through multiple threads and haven't seen that mentioned... Thank you!

? 😁

The lengthwise grind on this pattern in this material is difficult. The A2 ground easily but 5-10% of the surface of D3V is vanadium carbide (harder than silicon carbide, right up there close to diamond) so it doesn't cut, even with ceramic belts. It's not easy to get a clean grind on that much area in CPM 3V for the lengthwise grind technique. I'm the only one in the shop who can do it and it's a bear and I don't want to do it but Matty said throw a number at it and I did. I don't recommend it, it's a lot of money for what?
Ahhh....now I see what you did there.
Very subtle subliminal clue.
I saw how it works on The Amazing Virginian The Amazing Virginian o_O😄

Dude, give the guy a break for at least one day!
Can't you see he's tired...?

Hey Nate, shiv pre-order is basically over - any rough estimates on the Edc 1.2 pre-order?
Need more CPKs...More 🧟‍♂️🗡

We're going to order steel for it with this next heat. I plan to have them available next year. I can't do another pre-order right now, I like one small knife, one large knife and (occasionally) something special like a sword. That's three open pre-orders max. We will do another pre-order (of something) midyear next year once the DEK have shipped.

NTM, just to verify the fuller on the Shiv will be the same length, but a bit narrower on the "Double Edge Option/Offering?

Thanks

Tom

I'm sorry, I haven't actually worked out all the details. I'm sure there's going to be some tweaks once I get production underway and I have pre-production in hand. I always end up tweaking stuff, hence the disclaimer "here's what it isn't going to look like" That's always my best guess based on the previous build and other work but the final details happen once I have them in hand. It's probably why we're seldom fully utilizing our full capacity, I'm fussing with stuff. The plan is to narrow the swedge into an actual bevel and sharpen it, like I have in the past (no plunge), but that pushes the grind out into the fuller where it removes some of the ramp out which I don't like. I can shorten the fuller but another option is to narrow the fuller to give me more meat back there but I haven't analyzed this yet. So, short answer, I'm sorry but I don't know.
