The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Regarding working out the kinks with the MagnaCut heat treat…. Are you able to tell us if it has to do with edge retention, toughness, tolerances, or something else?

I’ve had to do quite a bit more straightening with MagnaCut than I’m used to, so I’ve been holding off on sending more out until Peter’s gets their process nailed down. I’m wondering if the work you’ve put in for your “recipe” might translate over to less warping with the regular Peter’s MagnaCut heat treat.

Naw man. My protocol probably warps worse than anybody's.

I am chasing edge durability which equates to edge retention more than just "toughness".

People equate toughness with durability, and if anything there is an inverse correlation here, but I won't get into that again.

I had my protocol dialed in here last autumn but we're having some difficulties scaling it up at Peters.

Like the Delta protocol, our optimized Magnacut process is more than just Aust time and temp and tempering temperatures etc, it is the material condition going into heat treat and quench rates and depths and the timing of steps. Some of this has required changes at Peters not just to their process but to their equipment.

It took a while to get the Delta protocol dialed in. It's taking a little while to get the Magnacut dialed in too.

Nah, I'm serious.

The very last sword is going on the Horizontal Machining Center right now. And then we cross our fingers and pray to the heat treat Gods
If it works, I'll get more material in our next run of 3V later this year
