The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Have you ever collected other knives or are you only into making and perfecting?

I started down this rabbit hole because I wanted a better skinning knife than I could buy.

Also, back in the late '90s my father-in-law gave me an inexpensive "Smith & Wesson" liner lock pocket knife which I really enjoyed and eventually consumed the blade. He used his up also. So I rebladed them with better steel.

Knives are tools.

Jo might disagree with me here, but I don't think I'm really a collector of anything. I have a few other maker's knives, mostly makers that I admire and I wanted to own a piece of theirs, but I'm not filling out a collection.

I also have an accumulation of production knives that I didn't make, but mostly for research purposes. And, other than evaluating them, I don't use them. Not because I'm trying to keep them nice but because I mostly don't like them.

This is probably not my finest attribute, but I have a lot of disdain for most of the knives that I see out there. I'm a snob and an obnoxious know-it-all. I'm a real riot at knife shows.

Generally speaking, I use my knives when I need a fixed blade and I use a Sebby or a Shiro when I need a folder.

My "collection" is really just an "accumulation".

Nathan your post about you scouting and shopping for top notch wood scales on the eve of Blade Show when vendors set up their tables and wares got me thinking:

Have you already dialed in all the wood scales for this ongoing DEK 1/2/3 preorders but will also be shopping for more potential future suitors, say for the Shiv 2.0, etc or will you also possibly be looking for some exotic wood supplies for this existing preorder? As a huge fan of your past AfBW scales, I was kinda bummed out that you purportedly ran out of that stash but TBT, if you manage to score something similar, I personally would not mind waiting longer for that popsicle stick sweepstake.

It's gotta be African Blackwood.

Nathan had and made the best, most gorgeous AfBW. I know this with utmost certainty because I have the receipts!

It's a gorgeous wood. One of my faves (I have a wood fetish). Those are especially pretty. Hard to find good black samples, though, of any size. I spent a lot of time at Blade Shows looking for it, with precious little to show. The sapwood is white as . . . white.

Out of my sheer ignorance and added bigotry when it comes to most steels , I never got on the Magnacut bandwagon because to start with, I didn't like its given name (see previous sentence!) as it sounded gimmicky and gadgety to me. So here is the ANAQ in light of the statement which you had made in your post from yesterday:

- In retrospect, do you feel that Cruwear would have been a better choice in the DEK3 variant or are you still in the R&D phase with that alloy to dial in the HT to your satisfaction? In other words as you have put it, do you feel that with Cruder the juice is worth the squeeze?

- I have heard on good authority that a random horse (pony?) followed Jo home on one of her walks and has made friends with Jo. How do you feel about Jo befriending a random horse without any coercion or enticement, whereas after almost 7 years of trying to get you a pony, you are still batting at zero dot zero?!

Here is the lone remaining block of decent African Blackwood that I have left from all my searches. One day I still hope to have a custom knife made with this . . .

You are so two weeks ago. That material is now known as "wood". (Keeping with the "absurdist" train of thought on the sub-forum this afternoon.)

I've got a call in to "you know who" in Sweden. Gird your loins.
