The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Here’s one - how does the Cruwear steel In my first batch BFK compare to current offerings in D3V or magna cut?
#notnathan

I've owned and used all 3 at one point or another. I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to tell the difference in most use case scenarios.

I will say this, during hard use it became pretty apparent which knife was D3V vs Magnacut. D3V is much more durable in my experience.

I haven't really beat on the cruwear to the same extent as the others, but from what I have done, it seems to be a pretty good middle ground between magnacut and d3v.

I can't believe Nathan would say that to a long time customer who loves the FK1. I want nothing to do with CPK or this forum....

...For at least the next 5 minutes.

The FK1 was a great knife. Is a great knife. I'm very proud of the work that we did with that knife. But, since then, we have developed small tweaks to the blade bevel geometry, the metallurgy, and the ergonomics of the handle. A lot of work went into improving the Field Knife into what it is today.

I love the FK1. I really do, it's a fantastic knife. A really fantastic knife. But the evolution from the FK1 to the FK3 includes some refinements that I'm proud of.

Everyone is entitled to their preferences of course. It's not like there's a night and day difference there. So I should perhaps rephrase and say that it is my humble opinion that the development that we have put into the field knife pattern over the years has improved it, although perhaps not for everyone.

The biggest difference is in the grip. The new design is more comfortable with a larger circumference and provides more grip options which equates to better comfort over time. But the OG FK1 did have flatter sides that would lock into your grip and allow a lot of torque. I cannot say that one approach is better than the other and some people could certainly have a preference.

The FK1 never really worked for me. I just didn’t feel comfortable with the grip. Everything in that line since the FK2 has been fantastic for me and the slightly longer blade on the BFK and FK3 is just the perfect length for me for utility type stuff.

The flatter handle of the FK1 made it better for scout carry, but yes, I noticed quite a significant difference in comfort when applying more pressure (eg. Making wood shavings) with the handles of the FK2 and FK3.

Nathan:

Do you happen to have any extra BFK scales lying around? Looked on your website & didn't see a way order scales there.

Not loving the scales that came with this BFK. I would prefer basic black micarta (or anything else they you might have available in black or grey):

Of course, I missed out on a pair of BFK scales that I'd prefer on The Exchange a few wks ago. Would rather not try to Rit-dye them & hope you can help me out.

Let me know if you can or not. Thx!

Yeah we have lots of scales for the BFK. Reach out to Jo and tell her what you're looking for and she'll see if we have any.

My FK1 was stolen during a break in. I was devastated and I'm sure the thieves had no idea what they scored. It will probably end up in a pawn shop in another state for $50 bucks. Anyway I recently replaced it with an FK2. The two are definitely different... but I love them both equally. Trying to pick a favourite is akin to trying to pick a favourite child. That said, my FK1 was my Yard Work companion most weekends and never let me down. I miss it still. Now I have a new companion.

My new approach is the "One is none and Two is One" mantra. So I'm trying to double up on my current CPK collection. So far I have. - 2x EDC's, 1x FK2, 1x HDFK, 2x Behemoth. I'm waiting to turn those 1's into 2's to build in redundancy.

Man, that's a bummer! I'm always afraid of that happening. As much as I'd love to always keep a CPK in my rig, I usually only leave replaceable knives in my rig for that very reason.

You should try a Dek1 also :)

I was a victim of a break-in myself this week, and I wanted to offer my condolences. I guess it is a silver lining that the burglar(s) didn't get my CPK LC, but the got an awful lot of other stuff.

Sorry you got hit.

Hi Nathan
really like your product, the CPK has given me the experience I had before all for However, I have been troubled a bit recently, shiv received it and found a grit on its surface, is this linked to the previous CPM steel incident? Will this have any effect on the performance of this excellent tool?

Found "a grit" on its surface?

CPM steel incident?

I don't know what you mean.

If there is a problem with your knife, you can return it for a replacement or a refund. Every knife gets inspected by at least four people, but problems can get by sometimes.

I may be the lucky boy, it's inside the handle and I'm not sure if it will have an effect
I'm shocked at cpk's strict quality control standards and it also reinforces the fact that I'm a die-hard cpk fan
However, since I'm in China, I'm not sure if this can be replaced, so I'd be very thankful if I could get any help from you!
