The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

As you probably already know, use masking tape on the spine before tightening the clamp and then apply a few layers of tape to the ricasso if you'd like but I've sharpened both an F3R and a few NeOns without a problem.

Unless the geometry works out different then on similarly ground Spyderco's, how do you get that last 3-4mm where the edge terminates? Seems like my plates won't reach it because the paddle is slightly bigger.

Of the four Shiros I have sharpened using my Wicked Edge sharpener, not one shows any indication of developing a recurve. I sharpened it no differently than I would any other knife was able to sharpen the entire cutting edge without difficulty other than being careful not to mar the ricasso area plunge line.

Owning a Shirogorov has changed the way I think about knives. This is #5 in less than a month and it's as amazing as the others.

Yes I have a problem. No i won't be buying any more for a while!

Welcome to the Bears' Den. Nice F3. What else have you picked up? With 5 in a month, Shiros have also changed the way you think about money. It happens....

Yeah that's fair to say. Earlier this year, I had to think seriously about knives that cost $100-$150

My brother-in-law gave me an F95T for my birthday (big birthday for sure but he's an amazing guy). That was June 23rd, which is when my money started flowing away lol

Besides the F95T and the F3, I've got a Neon Ultra Light, and two 111's. I bought a G10/Elmax 111 but then saw a good deal on a CF/390 111 that I should have ignored but didn't. Will list the G10 111 here soon - one is enough for me!

That's a nice cross section of Shiros, AshKramer AshKramer . I've got a Turtle, F3, UL, and 111 among mine too. There are NeOns with "better" steel, but I really like the open back of my UL. I'm sure that G10 111 is a very good knife, but you did well picking the CF M390 version. Mine is one of my favorites, re-profiled and tuned to free drop it's an absolute thumb guillotine and serious cutting machine.

ChazzyP ChazzyP the Neon Ultra Light is something else... feels like a premium Swiss watchmaker was commissioned to create a simple, elegant but effective high-end knife, and he came up with the UL. Love it!

I actually really like the look and feel of the G10 111 in burnt orange. I'm not generally a fan of colorful knives but this one just does it for me. Hard to say no to the 390 and carbon combo though.

I use an EdgePro, so I'm not really familiar with the WE stones and backers, but did give them a bit of a look online just now.

The blade geometry is quite different between Spydies and Shiros, though. The plunge grind on a Spydie is all but at a right angle to the primary grind, while the Shiro bevels back. The ricasso at that point in the former extends significantly past the secondary bevel while the latter's falls short of the edge bevel with the plunge grind extending down to it at an angle.

I would tend to agree with the esteemed CPP CPP that you need to exercise some care sharpening there but should be fine with your WE.

The overhang of the plastic may be a safe guard against scratching it up. I think you'll hit the end of the blade with the WE.

That's an epic thing to think you have! I hope you're right

Thanks AK and I definitely got the email confirmation from R1. The reason I used the  emoji was because R1 being a mere 110 miles to the north of me, I called to ask them if it was alright for me to just drive up there in a couple of days to pick up in person :)

Epic win Casinostocks Casinostocks Congratulations!

I was less than half an hour from Recon 1 last Friday and Saturday when I was in LA. Decided that discretion was a good plan because buying another Shiro right now isn't ideal. So I just stayed away lol

However, if I had that White Tiger waiting for me, you'd better believe I'd drive over.

Thanks for the kind words Mat. Your a great guy as well. Since visiting this forum and getting introduced to the Shirogorov line I have bought my fourth Shiro in the last few months (my avatar pic is from the last R1 lottery). I intended to just add one Shiro knife example to my collection but that plan hasn't worked out so well. Now I might be eating bologna sandwiches for lunch for a while but these knives are worth it.
