The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Thanks for the kind words. At the moment I’m not making them on order. But we’ll see. When this Corona sh*t keeps us at home for a long period of time maybe I’ll make some :)

Got my hands on the previously mentioned Shiro for a bit and was a bit disappointed by the action. The bearings seem to be a bit gritty and it’s most obvious audibly. Broke the knife down. Cleaned all of the bearings (MRBS) of their grease and reassembled with some Nano Oil 10. Much to my surprise there was no improvement in the action.

Sounds and grit are present with or without pressure on the lockbar. Maybe this is normal? I don’t have much experience with bearing knives and looking for input.

Quick videos as imgur won't allow you to post anything other than a very small file with sound. Is this normal Shiro action or is something out of line here? On deployment and fold you’ll notice the scratchy sound of the bearings. I will say the scratchiness is less audible in the videos especially on deployment than in person.

Sound more like the detent ball sliding over the detent ball path. Have you cleaned the detent ball and path? Maybe polish it a bit with a leather strop with some compound?

Yes - ball and path have been both cleaned and lightly oiled. Again the audible scratchiness is present both with tension on the lockbar and not. It seems to be coming exclusively from the bearings themselves.

Also noticed on reassembly that not all of the bearings simply dropped into their slots. Some needed a little nudge down into the cage. I'm wondering if some of the bearings are possibly oversized.

The bearings most likely are not oversized but just like it takes a nudge to get each bearing out of its slot it takes a nudge to get it into it. Did you clean and then lube the bearings? It seems too obvious to be the case but did you make sure a bearing came between the scale or race and the outside of the bearing case?

Whoops, just scrolled back through your previous posts and saw that you had cleaned and lubed the bearings... Try tightening and loosening the pivot

C Cold Bananas , I can't hear anything on your vid besides the blade hitting the stop pin when closing, but, no, it's not par for the course for Shiro action to make noise or feel gritty in any way. Did you get your knife on the secondary market? Perhaps the previous owner scratched something up on one of the bearing surfaces.

Other things to try--
>As your knife is an R Series, it has underlay washers which you should polish. I interior polish flat interior knife parts on an old loaded leather strop. Do the same for the bearing cages to de-burr their edges. Also both sides of the blade tang could be similarly polished.
>Check out the pivot interface, both the interior of the blade hole and the exterior of the female screw receiver. Polish these with a cloth loaded with jeweler's rouge or a lightly abrasive metal polish. I sometimes use a heavier lube in the pivot hole only--W85 NanoOil.
>Instead of oil, I usually put a little dot of FinishLine or other similar Teflon (PTF)-based grease on the detent ball.

...and just make sure everything is really clean inside--Windex or isopropyl alcohol both work well. Good luck getting your Shiro like it was made to be be--silent, free, and smooth as silk!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhh! Stop it! I'm selling everything I have non Shiro so I can come up with the money to buy one of those I found.....

Seriously I love that thing and have one in site. Hopefully I can make a deal with the guy.

Sorry, Phil, I don't mean to torture you, but I can't make myself stop--especially after two days carrying the Good Doctor.

I've always been a big knife kinda guy. My 95-sized Shiro's are right in my sweet spot and my bigger knives like my Cheburkov Voron, CKF Milk, Shiro 111, and others get their share of carry and use. I'm fond of my NeOn UL, but it's definitely on the small side for me, even for a light-in-shorts-or-slacks carry. There are those times a mid-sized knife's a good companion and there are those who've longed for that mid-sized Shiro. The thing with the RDD is it has every bit as much blade length as the various 95's, a slightly shorter handle, though still plenty enough purchase in hand for my arthritic old carpenter's mitts, but carries more in pocket like a NeOn than an F95. Part of that is it's stupidly light at 3.25 oz and part is its overall slimness. It's just a remarkable piece of design and execution that I'm really glad to have, carry, and use.

Here's hoping you can get your hands on the one you want. In the meantime, more torture for you with a couple F95R comparison shots.

I'm not sure why, but I always assumed the good Dr was a smaller knife. Beautiful pictures!

Thanks, man. The RDD is a very enigmatic piece--looking both murdery and delicate, a full 95 mm blade that's small in pocket, thin and light but still solid in hand and a most capable cutter. Also wicked photogenic.... :)

Missed out on my chance for the RDD I was looking at. Glad I can stare at yours till I find another.

New edit: Found another one at an even better price. Hope to purchase.

Working from home today so out comes the safe queen. This is the only one I have that I don't want to damage. I guess because this is the one I bought brand new. The other 4 are all second hand. (though hardly used by the original owners)
