The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

TKI/CCKS were a lovely time as always, and the Shiros were excellent. Only 3 CDs on offer at CCKS, I originally had speculated we might see a new CD model launch to keep the active lineup at 4, but no dice. I'm imagining that will happen when the Deep Space's run is completed(which should be coming up here very soon based on how many shows it's been at).

CCKS had the Stellar CD, Hati Magnetic, and 111 Deep Space as the 3 lotto knives.

1 went to an R1 employee which seems to happen every single show, which just raises questions - but not much you can do. Puts a bit of a stink on the whole process for me, but as long as R1 controls the US Shiro show presence, there are not other options to get a CD at table price. 2 buddies won during those lottos which was cool to see!

Custom pieces were outstanding and achieved typically wild results, with both the TKI auction knives going for over 20k, and the saturday auctions both going beyond 13(I believe). The return of the F95 in custom spec was great to see and I got to play with that one a good amount as a buddy ended up with it after all the lotto winning/flipping was said and done.

Show special Hati was neat, but I'm still not really a Hati guy - hoping for a return to the F95 specials for October and I might finally pick one up - I mostly regret not grabbing the Sinkevich Touch from last october as I'd have liked that one, I think - but the secondary pricing is absurd these days.

I Ilikesharpstuff Open the blade and look inside the handle scales near the pivot. It will say ”MRBS” if it is, otherwise you’ll see a symbol looking like a sun with rays around it, that’s single row bearings.

What he said^ Shiro marks the scales inside.

Thanks guys, guess I never knew this! Just checked my Neon Zero so I know where to look when it arrives.

on the older knives the sun has dots around it to tell you that has a single row of ball=f22 bearings, if the sun has rays that means roller bearings

KPL, Nano-oil or No oil on the MRBS?

I was wondering if anyone here runs there Shiro’s with dry bearings? I mean I’m sure they still put some oil on the pivot and detent but run the bearings dry. My Koenig Arius came that way and got me wondering 🤔

First run Quantum Gen2 needs a cleaning after many months.

pic for attention

I don't put anything on mine. They attract to much pocket gunk if you lube them up. I put a tiny bit on the dente ball and that's it. My neon is carried down in the bottom of my pocket daily and works fine. Once I take the factory grease out I usually only have to blow them out with air to keep them going.

Thanks for commenting. Appreciate you taking the time and letting me know. I will have some time later today to break the Quantum Gen2 down uninterrupted and will try your method and see if I like it. At most I will rub the bearings with Nano-oil and then wipe them off so they have a super thing coat of oil since the bearings are hardened 440C steel.

"Havoc" "Havoc" , like Mr.sig239 Mr.sig239 I'm no fan of grease in ball bearing pivot knives, but do lube mine after an initial cleaning to get all the gunk out. I use a small amount of W10 NanoOil under the bearing chase on each side. I like both its lubricating effect and that it makes dropping the BBs into place easier as well as keeping them there when reassembling. I don't put oil on the detent track as I want to keep it off the lock face to avoid any sticking issue, but add a tiny dab of FinishLine Fluoro Grease to the ball after the knife is back together.

I don't find that my EDC BB pivot knives pick up an inordinate amount of pocket crud or other contaminants thusly lubed, though my work users of that type do get a bit gunky after considerable use and require cleaning periodically. My Turtle has been on job sites a lot in the six years I've had it and been apart maybe three or four times. My other two regular Shiro work users--Hati and Tabargan--are on PB washers and need less maintenance. My remaining 5 Shiros all have ball or roller bearing pivots, are lubed with NanoOil, and require very little maintenance or cleaning used in a more EDC capacity.

Snagged myself an F95 Zero to complete my trifecta of high end cnc makers/knives.

This is definitely the sweet spot for me, short of CD/full custom at table pricing. Secondary on CD/customs just feels silly for what they deliver, but the 95 is such a great design I've found myself missing it while not having one.

Great to have a Shiro back in the collection, and this fills a great role for me as a "default" choice to put in my pocket over something like my Lochsa where I'm more worried about what happens to it!
