The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Just got this in today. I have four Shirogorov knives now, and this one is the smoothest right out of the box. It came with a mirror edge, which surprised me. Also included was a signed certificate of authenticity. I am really liking this knife, and am very happy I was able to get one of them. This one is definitely a keeper and will see a lot of use. Different lighting for these pictures, so it’s color varies some in the photos.

ETA: Also, it looks like the phone’s camera really ruined how the pattern of the scales looks. That is disappointing.

Is the term "custom" knife a bit of a misnomer? When we see Sergey offer custom knives at the knife shows it seems they are, yes, made by him 100% but were designed to his specifications and choices? Where as, a "custom" knife as I see it would be, a person goes to the knifemaker and requests certain materials and other choices and the knifemaker, within reason, executes those request and delivers the knife to the customer once payment is made.

I've too have questioned how the term "custom" is used, including by many makers besides Shiro.

I'm of the opinion that a knife which is a repeated model employing differences in materials and accents in not a custom. Semantically I would call that a "customized" production/mid-tech/etc. However, I believe a maker can create a custom without it originating from a customer request (even though it seems to contradict the definition a bit).

Shiro has clarified this. They offer three categories of knives: serial, which are the relatively widely available knives; custom division, which are a limited edition version with special materials made by one person in the workshop and a full-custom which is made by Sergei Shirogorov himself.

I understand. My sense is still that just because a master knifemaker (Sergei) makes a knife himself doesn't mean is should be called "custom".

As in, a knife is custom-made to the buyer’s specifications not the maker’s?

Yes...but you bring up a good point: it's custom to the knifemaker's specifications. However, all of Sergei's production knives are custom to his specifications...he just didn't hand make them.

Anyone recently send their knife back to the mother ship? I contacted Recon1 and they are going to send the Sigma back for a little spa work. Was wondering how long it takes? Any issues? How did you sleep knowing one of your babies was gone?

Of all the knives I've owned over the years, I've only ever sent one in for work, and it wasn't even mine. It was my son's Crooked River which got dropped and had a busted wooden corner.

My understanding is that R1 doesn't ship the knives out, but waits for Shirogorov to come over here for a knife show and hands it over. After what's required is completed back at the Workshop, the process is reversed and your knife comes back with Shiro to the next available show. I don't know that anything's changed nor how that's affected by the current enmity between our two countries.

If the process is still the same, then timing would be affected by how close your are calendar-wise to a show and how long it is to the next.
