The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

I was just more concerned with loose versus caged (in the traditional sense) because I’m somewhat dreading having to disassemble one of mine in the future for maintenance and ending up with bearing balls in my carpet. 😅😬

I typically fill a small cup/tupperware with enough alcohol to cover the bottom and remove the pivot/show scale right over the container. Anything that falls goes straight into the alcohol for cleaning and whatever doesn't fall is easily dropped in to keep it all in one place. I know that all the balls and the cages have ended up in the tub and go about business from there.

That said, every time I disassemble a Shiro I'm confident all the balls have gone into my container. Every time I reassemble a Shiro I'm sure I'm missing a ball or two until the very last one goes in place 😅 Totally understand the anxiety.

I recall there being a special tool for picking up bearing balls. Almost like a drill punch but instead of a pointed end it was dimpled. Seemed to work better than tweezers. Less risk of the tips slipping and accidentally shooting a ball across the room… You just get the tip wet with water or lube and the balls stick to it. Anyway, can’t think of what it was called or where I saw it but I’m sure it was in one of the numerous disassembly videos I watched on YouTube, and it seemed rather handy.

I'm not familiar with what you're describing, but if you search "vacuum pick up tool" there are lots of options generally made for placing electronics/chip components or gems in jewelry. Something like this might work well. There are also "jewelry ball grabbers" but they don't look like they'd be as convenient as what you mentioned or the vacuum tool and might struggle with tiny balls like Shiro bearings.

Another Russian Loscha just hit the exchange for $5250. I vaguely remember it being covered, but what was "table" on these?

edit: Marked sold now

I picked up a 111 Terrus and and holy crap it’s gonna take a little getting used to the size. In the meantime I’m mostly carrying an F95 and I had the Soft Overkill in the pocket for a few days as well.

What's everyone's opinion on the Gen 5 compared to past iterations?

I like the updates, especially the thinner, swedged blade. I didn’t like the “chaotic satin” finish at first but it’s growing on me since I have a few knives with it, I like the way it contrasts with the darker milling on the edges of the frame and can attest that it does hide “new” scratches pretty dang well. I decided to pull the Olive out today and carry it for a little bit.

The chaotic satin reminds me of Sergey's scratched mirror finish on his full custom blades. I took a little while to warm up to it - I'm not into polished blades in general - but the scratched mirror is such a cool effect. By all accounts it hides wear very well, too.

Hands down my favorite Shiro ever- the Danny Yard collab "Green Machine" F95.

I have no idea how many people enter these lottos at Recon 1. That I was drawn to buy one of these blows my mind regardless.
Congrats !!! That’s a lean mean “green machine”. I had noticed the drop also and was EXTREMELY tempted. I barely resisted, only due to the fact that I bought my first ever Shiro (F95NL Copper) just a couple of weeks ago. Grabbed a used/ user Ursus Quantum yesterday, as well…for a work knife.

Granted pics are warranted so I’ll post soon. Again, great acquisition on your “Green Machine”. She’s a beauty, for sure !!! 🔥🔥🔥

Very cool!.. I wonder if it's based on the F95 Zero 2024. It definitely does have CPS implemented for both screws.

P.S. nope, there's brand logo on the blade and the grind looks rather similar to earlier editions (F95 Zero 2022, Hati Gen3, etc.). I guess it was a special batch intended for customization. It makes sense.

Yes- I think it's a Gen 4 base.
The sticker on the box says "F95 Blank".

So the way I read it- Shiro sent Danny ten "blanks" and he went to work on them.
Definitely among the most unique F95s out there.
Everything but the blade and bearings were touched. Seems to be a base ano of bright copper, with the organic green on top.
Organic is a good word for it.. it reminds me of a cicada or mantis.
The darkened hardware isn't common. Even the screw for the overtravel stop has a blue tint to it.

I was wondering how many people enter these lottos. Tamar at R1 didn't know off hand. I asked Danny on IG, he said anywhere from hundreds to thousands, depending on the specific lotto knife.
I REALLY wanted one of these. I was even prepared to buy one secondhand at an inflated price.
Goes to show- thanksgiving miracles DO happen!

I remember your story about cooking your (now my) RDD on your stovetop to soften the thread locker. It still smells vaguely of bacon and eggs....
That probably only worked because the stove our house came with was a glass top electric stove, had I tried to loosen the pivot on the gas stove your RDD may have been a blob of titanium, M390 and carbon fiber (possibly some hyperbole)!
