The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Happy Friday Bears!! I got a new user to work into the daily rotation. He won’t be the only new guy for long!!!! I love my F95, so I figured I’d start with a Hati.

I need to round out my production knives, so the Astrum, Q95, F3, and maybe a Quantum (although I have had three and got rid of them all) are next on the hitlist. The 111 is a Sword and I’m not sure about it. After that I move onto the special ones. Lol. I have a sickness.

The family is growing. IMG_1695.jpegIMG_1690.jpegIMG_1692.jpegIMG_1691.jpegIMG_1693.jpegIMG_1694.jpeg

Beautiful collection! I'm jealous 😁

Thank you so much! That is an amazing compliment. Although some of these guys in here have spent Oligarch money on their collections (which I love seeing and would do myself if I hit the lotto). I would also have to worry about my 15 yo Rob Reinering me for my shiros, he collects knives as well.

Amen! I have one 28 and one 8 that both collect. Both of them are always after my Gorovs.

Lost my hati gen 3. Was my 1st shiro. Loved that thing. I reprofiled to about 11°, it flew through cardboard and paper without effort.

Got depressed and ordered a Strip, skinny version. Im told this knife is very thin. I will reprofile this one as well. It looks like sharpening the strip will be a challenege, the choil looks very small.

New Knife Tuesday! I’ve been wanting this since it came out. I’m a huge Sinkevich collab fan, and the Sinkevich touch Q95 does not disappoint. IMG_1739.jpeg

for someone who wants to get their first production Shiro, to use and carry, anyone have a recommendation? Would a Q95 be a decent option? I've always loved Shiros but never looked into them much just because so expensive, but I'm considering selling several pieces to try and fund one.

For the first? Absolutely. Personally, I’d try to find a used quantum or quantum Ursus on the used market. That’ll be a good Segway into the brand to give you a taste. I bet you won’t stop there though. . . 😉😁

Yes I mean a Quantum Ursus Q95 that is, they seem to come up for decent prices on the secondary. I justttttt missed one on the exchange here that would have been perfect, the micarta version I prefer even. I'll keep an eye out going forward

Just so you're clear, the Quantum Ursus and Q95 Ursus are separate lines, the latter being a liner lock with a slightly different blade shape than the earlier Quantum and the Quantum Ursus lines. The Ursus lines are more "entry level" models. I would definitely go with something from the secondary market to get started and you could also look at F95's (frame locks) or F3's (liner locks). There are older entry level F3's that are more economical too along with some 111 models. None of these are lacking in quality, they just have less milling, steels like Elmax, and simpler pivots.

Affirmative, I'm still not clear on the different lines they offer. You are correct it was an Ursus q95, no Quantum. I really liked that model, very good looking.

Do all of the lines get the same heat treat protocol? I have read that Shiro does custom heat treats for each batch of steel they use, so for slight composition variance from one to the other, they adjust heat treat accordingly. Does that still apply to the more economical lines?

I'm unfamiliar with that "custom heat treats" protocol, but my experience with Shiro is that they do an excellent job on every blade steel I have or have had including M390, Vanax 37, Elmax, S30V, Cromax, and 440C. No issues with with chipping or edge retention and good ease of sharpening for each variety.
