The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

I have been in the knife hobby for a while but never got into Shiros, being worried that they were overpriced. That all changed a month ago and I'm heavily bitten by the Shiro bug after acquiring a NeON S90V. What an amazing blade it is!

More recently, I have an opportunity to acquire a HatiON. Does anyone have insights or more details on this? It looks to be an upgraded custom division NeON, but anything else that is notable? And for the same price of around $3k, would you guys consider another model? Many thanks and hope to post photos soon

How did you a hold of the HaitON? I noticed it was marked as sold at Recon1 and suspect there may have only been one, are the one that bought it?

Did you send your knife over for service/repair, Marcus? If so, I'm sure a lot of us would be interested in the details, process, costs, and your experience.

Just on my way to work. I will fill in some details later tonight.

Overall it was a really good experience.

So as far as the warranty trip goes...

The detent ball fell out without warning or trace about a half a year ago. I was reluctant to send it for repair due to Canadian border services agency (CBSA) wrongly calling it an auto upon initial arrival into Canada.

However, I finally did send it in mid Aug. I followed their shipping guidelines and it made it to them without a hitch.

I was on the fence about getting the finishes on the knife refurbished, so there was a bit of communication (Good. A day or two for reaponse) back and forth. I decided to keep the scratches because I plan on using the knife anyway.

They notified me, and shipped my knife shortly after that. Sailed into Canada with no issues. About a 2 month turn around.

Because it was a warranty issue I did not pay return shipping, but they did tell me if a knife was sent in just for a "spa" they would charge shipping.

It’s a CD NeON with a CF front scale. They were released once at Blade show and once at the G9 Vegas show. Both were lottery pieces. I don’t know if the run was 30 total or 30 per show, I suspect it was total. The ones for G9 were mid-marked as being MRBS, but I have confirmed with Shirogorov that they run on roller bearings like the Blade show run.

The fit and finish is impeccable. The knife is palpably lighter than the standard NeON Lite. Basically a custom division knife in a much smaller package.

Value wise, you’re in a bit of a quandary. It’s essentially the same model as the standard NeON, just with major upgrades, and it’s still a small pocket knife. There’s no exotic materials. Different blade grind. Different finishing. Different bearings. 3D milling on the handles. Internal lightening pockets. Higher quality craftsmanship and finishing. And of course, exclusivity. In the end it’s worth what you what you think it’s worth, that’s how the market works.

Table price was $1300. Secondary market has been nearly double that or more. I’ve seen maybe three on the market so far. One on Recon1, one on instagram, and one on USN. They all sold more or less instantaneously for asking price.

I don’t think I’d sell mine for $3k since I’d never find another one, but then again I wouldn’t buy one at that price either.

If you haven’t bought it yet, this is probably all a moot point since it’s probably sold.

I will never be in a position to buy one of these knives but God I hope I can at least hold and flip one once.

ChazzyP, can you open the 111 using the fuller/notch?
I can, but it’s difficult for me as I have thick, short-fingered, arthritic hands. I’ve read about and seen videos of guys using the fuller to open the 111 rather easily. I believe there’s a video by @anvil_den on this thread somewhere of him tuning up his 111 to make it wicked free and smoother as well as displaying multiple opening techniques.
I’ve tuned my F95 Python similarly for super action, but have yet to tackle the same internal work on my MRBS 111.

@anvil_den 's post with his various 111 opening techniques is back at post #573 at page 29 of this thread. His pictorial of tune-up work on that knife is on page 17, post #322. Every time I see how free his 111 is a want to go take my knife apart and get it like his--just need to dedicate some time and careful concentration to take care of all those loose bbs in a MRBS knife.

Membership in the Shirogorov club has its privileges. For one, you get to post in this thread and, that's about it right now.

That's not enough for you? The greatest privilege, of course, is the ownership requirement itself, whereby one gets to carry, use, and fondle one's very own Shiros. Think I'll head over to the knife boxes and grab my Tabargan.

Well. For the price, I sort of expected to get directions and a password for entry into one of those underground Russian Speakeasy joints run by the Russian mafia and sponsored by the illicit patronage of various officials and politicians cuddling with their mistresses. I'm a member of my HOA so...
