The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Well. For the price, I sort of expected to get directions and a password for entry into one of those underground Russian Speakeasy joints run by the Russian mafia and sponsored by the illicit patronage of various officials and politicians cuddling with their mistresses. I a member of my HOA so...
Unfortunately I can't share that info here as I don't care to risk infraction in a "family friendly" GKD thread.

silverds -- another trick to opening the 111 with the fuller if using index finger is awkward or just doesn't snap open positively (as it is all relative to user hand size to knife and how securely it can be held when opening)... is to hold it down a little lower and use middle and ring finger... just have to synchronize those 2 ;)

Beautiful knives, A anvil_den ! Your RFT is pretty sweet too rexbo. As to the guessing game, and having a sense of what those beautiful knives cost, I think you can get one just like it on the Big Auction Site for $29.95. It's called the "sucka."

It's been pretty quiet around here... Nothing new but put out some sharpening and stropping theory on my good ol' 95 EDC
Been a year or so since I last put a "convex" edge on it and it still didn't need any further sharpening except for a few pass on the strop every couple of weeks.
I was really bored and wanted to "improve" on it... and thought.. what if an even wider area behind the edge is smooth out while edge is retouch up in progression of 0.3-0.5 degree for a smoother curve after stropping?"... The benchmark for the ease of cutting feel was my RS Higo.

Just got off the workbench... still rough.

Thin-Slice Thin-Slice is right, A anvil_den , that is one awesome job on your F95 that sure does evoke a Hamon or some sort of laminated blade. That sucker is super-scary sharp, brother.

About a year ago I was going through my Shiros up at our Vermont cabin, touching up the edges and found all the factory angles but one pretty spot-on 20 dps which made for easy work on the SharpMaker. I've always liked the look of the really thin secondary grind line on Shiros, but was a little bummed to find my 111 was more obtuse than 20 dps and said the heck with it and re-profiled to 15 per as the blade on that knife isn't exactly thin behind the edge anyway. I used my EdgePro but had not yet purchased my diamond hones for it and spent an awful lot of time working that M390 back with the 200 ceramic. (That job was the impetus for buying the fine and extra fine diamond hones.)

Anyway, I was pleased with the result as the edge bevel didn't look too-too broad and the knife cuts way better and is wicked slicier now. Nothing like a_d's, but pretty damn sharp nonetheless....

Edit: That last pic got me hungry and up out of my chair to make dinner.

Thanks Thin-Slice ;)

Ajack60 -- I sure use the hell outta mine... Ok not all my Shiros but at the very least the one posted above :)

Chazzy- the only problem I have going with an acute angle is the edge retention. Actually I'm just writing up on my blog on the "history" of the changes to the edge on this knife right up to what was done last week. My woes with not even 15 but 17 dps was it wouldn't slice like the way I like my knives to be after a short while. It's still working sharp but just now the sharp "sharp" kind of sharp if u get what Im trying to say. This stepped angling profile I put on the F95 lasted a year.. .didnt need further sharpening.. just stropping to keep in shape... o_O

Ok one more for the New Year
I'm putting a mid tone just along the line... to look more "harmon"-ish :)
Not quite finish.... but running out of the needed micron size of diamond paste for now...

^^^Looks great, A anvil_den ! You're spot-on about the edge retention, too.

I didn't mention it in my post, coz I was too lazy to get up and cross the room to get the knife and double-check, but my usual habit with 15 dps is to add a 20 dps micro-bevel when I do sharpen that acutely. I did get up and check the knife just now under close light and the 111's edge is indeed done in that manner. This compound edge somewhat approximates a convex edge and makes for a bit more durability as well as easy touch-ups. I'll usually do the steeper angle on the EdgePro and the micro-bevel on the SharpMaker so I can touch up on the latter as it's so quick to set up and put away.

My sweet spot is between 17-18 DPS. And like extremelly light 10-20 strokes with my finest ceramic about 1-2 degrees higher for the microbevel. Because I rotate mine have not had to resharpen any of mine yet. Then again been collecting/using for about a year and half now and majority of my first purchases are gone (Benchmades/Spydercos). After my first frame lock I fell in love and havent looked back. Currently only own Shiros and CRK's.

I reallllllly want a M.Raymond Galaxis but thats way out of my range.

The new F3 versions look awesome though. Always loved me some CF.
