The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

So you're thinking of a Sergey Shirogorov design for Spyderco or ZT like the Drunken or or maybe one of the Hinderer ZTs? So the price point would be higher than a Spydie or ZT but lower than a Shiro?

I don't think of Spydercos or ZTs as "budget" knives and it wasn't my intention to suggest that any collab would be that. It's just that so far all the Shiro collabs are priced considerably higher than their serial knives, more or less in the neighborhood of their Custom Division offerings. I hadn't thought of a Shiro designer credit on another maker's knife.

Right, a Shiro design made by ZT or Spyderco...examples would be the 0460 family or the Drunken I mentioned. For Spyderco, their upper tier models are usually made in Taichung and often cost $250+

Considering that fit, finish and flipping action are as much part of the Shirogorov image as design it seems unlikely that this would happen. Although Shiro collaborations are expensive they are cheaper than the customs by the designers they collaborate with. For example, the Sigma collaboration between Shirogorov and Sinkevich was $1,300.00 the full custom Sigma went for $7,500.00.

Bath day yesterday for my F3 Python. The Micarta darkens with use, mostly from hand oil, but a scrub with a nail brush, hot water, and hand soap brightens things right up. A blow dry gets all the moisture out and the old snake is good to go again

Thanks. I started scanning right away. Found Rogue Bladeworks but he'll only do production runs. The two I want to mod are never going to be as popular as a Benchmade or ZT.

EDIT: I sent an email to Josh at REK. Thanks again.

We had a couple guys here that did beautiful work, but, as with many custom scale makers or pimpers, they went down in flames--not delivering the product, sometimes with pre-payment and/or not returning knives sent to be fitted.

Keyman is a member here who does custom scale work on the side. He does mostly Benchmade, as that's his passion, but might consider your F3. He's extremely trustworthy, does nice work for a decent price, and is a good guy. Email or PM again if you don't hear back initially.

Cuscadi (Custom Scale Division) is in Germany, but have been doing scales for some time. Lots of guys have dealt with Luke--he did some for me--and he's also trustworthy and not unreasonably priced. It usually takes a bit longer to get your stuff than estimated, but I've never heard of him not coming through.

You can search Keyman here and Google Cuscadi.

Well, having sold my truly favorite (somewhat affordable - will never own a Shiro custom :()knife of all times - My F3 because it was just too big as my EDC out in the world and in the home of my clients. Yes, I caved in to the timidity of those who just don't get it - but they afford me my life style. I have been telling myself that if I could ever find the Shiro in the 3-1/2" or a bit smaller range that wasn't an all Ti knife I would jump in again. Yesterday I found on the exchange and bought a Shirogorov Hation Lite :). I'm excited to soon be flipping a Shiro again but a bit nervous at the expensive $$s for yet another knife I could not handle before purchasing. Wish me luck, alternatively, I'll be talking to you on the exchange. Hope to be snuggled in the DEN before winter.

My wife said I'm nuts to think different scales or taking off a pocket clip will make a knife appear less dangerous.

marchone I wondered why you were thinking of taking the clip off and changing the scales o_O
Your F3 is such a nice knife  But hey - I sold mine  :D

You guys are a breath of sanity. Josh at REK talked me out of modding a RealSteel. Said it's not worth it.
Do you have another pic of your F3 highlighting the backspacer? I zoomed in on your pic above and it looks like translucent red G10. Kevin Wilkins had a pair of Griptilian scales like that on close-out a few years ago and I kicked myself for not grabbing them when I had the chance. Nice material, that.

I’m torn between picking up a F95T or an F3R....

I’ve had the F3R before but let go for another purchase. Now I’m drawn back because fit and finish was so nice not much else is comparable.

Only thing was the metal thrust washer under the MRBS was fairly thin and looked like it would dent easily if lateral forces were put on the blade making the bearings dent the washer.

Does the newer F95T have these same thin thrust washer or are they a thicker?

Thanks in advance for any help and look forward to picking up another Shiro!
