The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

My F95 is coming in the mail next Wednesday :D:D:D
Love the cutout at the top of the blade and the Ano~Blue stonewash!

This one has the MRBS and steel washer, milled scales for weight and Vanax 37 Blade.
So I leave ya with a couple of pics before I get the real thing in hand soon.

I wish Shirogorov would make a plain fixed blade with their usual geometry. That's what I'm really looking for. Any suggestions are welcome.

I’m torn between picking up a F95T or an F3R....

I’ve had the F3R before but let go for another purchase. Now I’m drawn back because fit and finish was so nice not much else is comparable.

Only thing was the metal thrust washer under the MRBS was fairly thin and looked like it would dent easily if lateral forces were put on the blade making the bearings dent the washer.

Does the newer F95T have these same thin thrust washer or are they a thicker?

Thanks in advance for any help and look forward to picking up another Shiro!

Not sure about the thickness of the washer, but I do know the F95T is a awesome knife. I like it more than my Shiro 111.

Yes, the F95T is an older style, but it has always been a looker to me. I think it will always be one of the Iconic styles from Shirogorov. I never get tired of looking at it.

Thanks for the reply and the pic...can’t wait till next Wednesday, day before thanksgiving and an early Christmas for me :D

TALON52 TALON52 Thank you for your Service.
I’m a retired Veteran myself.

Ok, so have had the F95R Turtle for 5 days now and finally took some pics. Wow, I have to say at 4.5oz I’m really loving this all Ti and the stonewashed blue ano is very nice. Factory edge was decent, but I put a new razor edge on it following factory bevel for minimal steel loss. The fit and finish on these Shiro’s are no less than superb. Even if you take the screw out the blade stays perfectly centered....now that’s build quality!

I’m very happy with my One Bear F3. The build quality is excellent but the main selling point for me is the blade configuration. I noticed many Russian knife makers use a similar pattern. Ural EDC and CultroTech being two.

THAT BLUE!

I have the same knife, but mine is not quite that color. That is gorgeous!

That's one sweet Turtle "Havoc" "Havoc" .

I've had the same experience with the out-of-the-box sharpness with my Shiros--a decent edge but not overwhelmingly keen. On all but one, though, not too many swipes on the SharpMaker got them screaming sharp. My 111's factory edge was around 22 dps and I wasn't about to reprofile that M390 on a SharpMaker, so I went 15 dps on the EdgePro with a SM 20 dps micro-bevel.

ChazzyP ChazzyP thanks

I have a KME Delux sharpening kit, that kit has everything I need for getting a nice edge. It has the diamond stones, Arkansas translucent and the kangaroo leather strop. I also have a Green KP strop I use for touch-ups whenever needed. After finishing the new edge and just following original grind I measured the angle and it came in at 18° which is my preferred angle...lucky me :)

I’ve never really tried a micro-bevel, I hear good and bad. Good if you know how to resharpen them and bad if you don’t, lol. Since I have not tried a micro-bevel I should probably start on a cheap knife first as I hear you lose a lot of Blade stock if you screw up your micro-bevel on the resharpen and have to grind it out.

Side note:

I found out that the notch under the jimping in the blade will no longer be available on production models. They stopped and will only have the notch on the Shiro CD models.

I’m not sure how many had it, but I remember my F3R I sold in June this year had the notch.
So I think it was just in the 2017 and very early 2018.

So if you have one with the notch under the jimping, keep it!

Where did you hear that the notch under the jimping (extraction)is being discontinued? I have a F95NLGX that I received perhaps two months ago that has one.

I noticed some Russian websites still had some F95 for sale that had the jimping extraction, but was listed as a 2017 model. So it looks like 2017 to around middle of 2018 had the jimping extraction. All the late 2018 models I have seen do not have the jimping extraction.

Was curious, so I called Recon1 on Nov-20 Tuesday of this week and asked. They told me that it won’t be on the production models anymore.

ChazzyP ChazzyP what’s the birthday of your F95NLGX or does it just give the year?

I don't know the birthday or year of the F95NLGX but the limited run of the knife was announced on September 5, 2018 for the tenth gathering (GX)

ChazzyP ChazzyP That F95NLGX is a Special Edition. So I would think that’s why that style blade is on it.

Look at all the newer regular F95’s, even on the Shirogorov site, no more have them.

EDIT....

I will try to confirm from Shirogorov themselves and make sure. I would hope the only vendor in NA wouldn’t blow smoke.

That F95NLGX is the Shirogorov Bears Edition available by lottery to members of that club over at USN. I did not enter and don't have that knife, "Havoc" "Havoc" . There are a number of Bears' Denizens here that are also Shiro Bears over there and have that knife-- CPP CPP , @anvil_den , @ursa08 , along with several others.

As to the micro-bevel, I wouldn't put one on a knife that required frequent sharpening, but have done it to a few knives in harder steels like D2 and M390. I try to keep the micro-bevel as micro as possible and do it on the SharpMaker to make touch ups quick and easy. The secondary bevel is done on the EdgePro and only occasionally needs to be taken back a little. It's easy enough to abandon, too, by just re-sharpening at the micro-bevel angle, though you would eventually lose the steel taken up by the more acute secondary. Of course you'd lose that anyway in a knife that has been sharpened a lot over the years.
