The Becker, Hiking Stove, Camp Stove, and Cookset/Mess Kit Thread

How much heat do these little Emberlits throw off compared to a small fire? would you use it for heat or just cooking?

Cooking. It took 13 minutes for a few cups of water to boil in my Snow Peak kettle, but it was windy as can be out.

Hi folks,

I hope it is the right place to post this but I'm looking for advices.

I'm looking for a replacement for my USGI plastic canteen, SS cup kit. Basically, I need a lid and the plastic canteen isn't what I'm really looking for. Also a cover would be nice... In the picture below, you will find my usual set up... nothing fancy.

So here's the deal! I narrowed my choices at 2 and I'm wondering if you guys, the experts in mess kit, can help me with that:

- The Basic Canteen Cooking Kit from The Pathfinder School. (Even if I don't really need the stove and tinder it's a nice to have. The cover looks cheap thought, I can get my hand on it for 93$ CAN) http://www.thepathfinderstore.com/basic-canteen-cooking-kit/

- A combo of : Klean Kanteen 40 oz SS bottle + Vargo Titanium mug 750 ml (http://www.vargooutdoors.com/titanium-ti-lite-mug-750.html#.UvOdo7BASSo) and a Condor cover at Canteenshop for 100$ CAN

Thank you for your time and reviews!

i'm going to copy and paste my replies from that other forum into this thread. here goes...i have far more cook/stove kits than any other piece of gear i think (maybe my shelter kit is equal)...i'll go back from the very beginning and work towards my newest kit.

my oldest piece of kit is this usgi canteen cup with white box stove and a piece of aluminum i cut from an old george foreman grill i think as a cover. i have a nalgene oasis bottle that nests but not in the pics.

then tried an msr stainless steel kettle for melting snow. the plastic handle on the lid melted soon after and got rid of the whole kettle - too specialized for my taste.

then tried the jetboil with the fry pan...sold the fry pan soon after (they say it's non-stick but it's worth crap - eggs stuck to it like any other uncoated pan) but kept the jetboil for urban emergency stuff.

msr 445 ml stowaway pot and gsi cup.

jay_cook_kit_004_zps1219cf67.jpg

msr 775 ml stowaway pot - bombproof and cheap too.

with my patented wire hanger hook that connected the handle to the lid lock so i can hang it.

my oldest kit is a usgi canteen & cup combo so i just had to have this heavy cover titanium mess kit when it came out.

you're welcome! now i have to go back to the woods so i can take more pics.

Man, I hear that, I'm ready to get out. We were thinking of doing a short jaunt today, but didn't. We should have though.

So I was in the surplus store today , bought my first trangia , a 27-5UL and this little mess set : obviously the mess set is second hand but it's in good nick . I dunno though if I'll be able to boil water in the two tins of the mess set? image.jpgimage.jpg

Sure you could boil water in them. I have the Trangia 25-4UL. I should have gotten the 27.

Here are some pics of the 2014 Stanley cook set.

Here's the only fail in the kit. You would think they'd have designed the handles so that you could combine the two shorter ones into one long handle. Not so.
The tabs don't quite catch. Well, one catches, but the other side does not. Would probably still work, but it's not as trustworthy as it might be.

Since the handles are plastic, you could probably correct that with a slight bit of sanding. Not enough to keep it from working with the other item, just enough to ease it in there.
Let us know if you mod it out.

Yeah, I'm thinking about just that. I think the relief needs to come on the male side. That way, the spatula/ladle connection will still be nice and tight.

That got a little too sexual...

Guess I'll put it here as well.

I made this about a year ago, and didn't ever quite finish it the way I wanted, but here's the photos of what I did complete. Have never used it, obviously:

Complete kit:

Out of bag:

I have a computer fan cover on the bottom:

Ash pan, and legs in the Stanley:

Everything:

Legs attached:

Tent stakes inserted. I bent them slightly, to help them from sliding out:

010.png

If you were to build a fire in it, you would do so, and put the cook set in place:

012.png

Or, if using an alcohol burner, place the alcohol burner on the tent stakes, and put the fan cover on top:

013.png

Then the cook set on top of that:

With the windscreen, and ash pan. The holes I made on the legs, are for the windscreen to go through:

The only thing I had left to do, was to make a slotted cover, so to speak, to put on the tent stakes, so I could also use trioxane, if needed.

BTW, this is NOT my idea. I got it from here, from PeteB. All credit goes to him: http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/showt...a-Hobo-stove?p=1580056&viewfull=1#post1580056

Also, lots of good ideas in this thread at BCUK: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33879&
