The Beer Scout Knife

Deinos, in my opinion, I think the Maroon Micarta is the best looking of the run. I have a beer barrel because it's just too good of a story, but I think the Micarta is the best Beer Scout. If you are looking at the all steel Scouts, I'd take the Ebony over all of the caplifters. I just wish the Ebony had brass liners.

Ended up ordering the beer barrel oak the same day i asked for the same reasons you did. Micarta and acryllic models looked great, but felt like the oak gave a knife with a ton of character even more. Should have it tomorrow barring shenanigans eith usps and holidays. Looking forward to starting some holiday fueled patina on it :-) Will be my first traditional I have purchased as an adult (have old case peanuts and barlows given to me as a kid or passed down from my dad).

Got here yesterday. Looking forward to putting it to some hard bar work this weekend!

Very nice, Deinos! Does it have much of the "shiny" quarter sawn characteristics? I enjoy the streaks in mine.

A Christmas gift from the wife. I am pretty sure that the main blade will prove it's usefulness soon. The secondary has already done so more than once today for our invited guests...and myself.

Anyone know the story on the beer barrel oak handles? Where they came from or whatever?

If it's a beer I drink then cool. If not I'll buy some. If I can't get any then I still have the Beer Scout, which is better than when I didn't and it'll make a great story to raise a cold bottle up to.

This speaks more directly to the charred oak beer barrel covers, but it's my understanding the same barrel was used for the charred and non-charred. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

My saw cut beer scout has developed a pin crack at the rocker pin. :( It's disappointing since I've only lightly used the knife and I've kept it in a slip case. I suspect it's because the pin is so close to the chamfer on the cover.

I had the same happen to my Texas Camp knife. The pin on mine is very close to the chamfered edge also. I'm sure that the huge size of my knife, and my love for hearing that bear trap walk and talk, only made the occurrence far more likely to happen. At the first sign of a crack, I filled the crack with very thin CA glue and wiped off the excess. That seemed to stop the crack in it's tracks, and I've had no problems since. You have to use a magnifying glass to even see the crack now.

I'll also try CA glue. Unfortunately, it bulges a bit under the stress from the rocker pin but the crack is very tight. The sowbelly that I dropped from pocket height :o has a crack that seems to be fairly stable after a CA glue patch. Battle scars. ;)
