The Beer Scout Knife

Stand: I like the lanyards. I like the brown on the tortoise, but I think a grey on the ivory would make the scales pop a bit.

Personally, I prefer leather lanyards. When mine lands, it will probably get a brown leather one with a barrel knot about 1/2 way down then a button knot or figure eight as the terminus.

Most likely the figure eight since the button knot is time consuming enough to work out in slick paracord...

Singin: Thanks, if you want me to PM you with where they had some left, let me know. If there is a possibility of getting a return on yours.

I've never been a fan of lanyards, They look good, but tend to get in the way for me. I'm not sure I like the bail either. Twice now, I've had it interfere with the closing of the blade. That's not good. Anyone else notice this? I'm having to be very careful when I close it.

Yeah I am not used to the bail and notice it getting in the way of closing too.

Once I get mine broken in I plan on removing the bail and using some leather strap to make a lanyard. I like a lanyard but the bail adds so much bulk and play.

Now, I have to find some rawhide/leather that will work. Please feel free to PM me a link, or maybe there's a thread for lanyard tying here on BF we can link to?

I normally use leather laces from boots or boat shoes. To make them fit through the lanyard hole, you have to skein the last 2" of the lace, or thin it out so it comes to a point.

I normally just lay it flat on a side and make a diagonal cut towards the end of the lace. Pull the lace through then tie my knots. (When I get home, I will flip through a few of my books and give some names of knots that may work for you.)

Pics of the ebony are popping up on "What's Happening."

I think this is going to be one darned handsome knife in ebony! I'm a sucker for ebony. How many beer scouts can a guy have????

Hmmm...

tstaut, indeed the Ebony will be a looker.

and lots of lessons on paracord lanyards on utube. I think and easy one is the cobra pattern

Thanks, I know where to get one, just out of money.

Mine in ivory bone came this morning.
I am not a happy camper.

1. The bone around the bail hole on the mark side is badly discolored. Hundreds of tiny black specks. I know it is natural bone, but there is enough of it to look bad.

2. the blade was not sharpnd. Had the very smallest of a tiny bevel and butter knife dull, literally.

3. The springs are not flush on half stop.

4. The sheepsfoot blade is off center. Nearly touching the liner.

Reminds me of a Case from the 90's.

Oldways, can you post a picture of the Black spots? Mine has some too, but doesn't sound near that bad. A little dull too, but that is fixable.

Take the issues up with your dealer or GEC. One of them will make it right! No reason to settle for a lousy knife.

Barry, I think I'm seeing Brazilian bloodwood, do my eyes deceive me?

Oldways, With no picture, I can only imagine your knife, but if you are unhappy with it, I'd return it. However, of all the complaints you have of yours, the only thing that would bother me is #4. I actually prefer the discoloration and the tiny specks, the blade sounds like the typical "GEC sharp" which is NOT sharp ( I always sharpen mine anyway),. my springs aren't flush at half stop. but pretty close. Off center is not a bother to me unless it is so very close to the frame that it is touching.

Again, I haven't actually seen the knife, and each of us has different likes and dislikes, and if I disliked it so much I wouldn't carry it, I'd definitely send it back.

I just saw the SFO Natural Micarta and I just canceled my order of the saw cut bone.

I guess it's back to the waiting game...
