The Beer Scout Knife

Very nice, Barry! I put in a little back light in my latest.

Yes! Did you supply the bloodwood, Barry? Anyways, they look to be some real stunners!

I did supply the Brazilian Bloodwood Brad, but I think you're seeing the cocobolo pics. I haven't seen pics of the BW yet as I think they just cut it recently. Take it from me, though, it is real purty! :)

Thank you Steve, I like a long lanyard on these BS knives. A little hangin outside the pocket, with a bit of a handle on the end, is perfect for reach and access.

Thanks Barry. I guess maybe what I saw was unfinished orange camel bone. Still, excitement abounds!

Mine in ivory bone came this morning.
I am not a happy camper.

I'm sorry to hear this. :(

1. The bone around the bail hole on the mark side is badly discolored. Hundreds of tiny black specks. I know it is natural bone, but there is enough of it to look bad.

From what I remember of conversations at GEC at the time the white bone TC Barlows were revealed, it is challenging to finish the knives (grinding? then buffing?) without some of the filings(?) becoming buffed into the bone, leaving black marks, and [too] much bone is easily removed if trying to eradicate the effect once present.

These black specks are present to some extent on almost every white bone knife of theirs I've seen, if one looks closely. It sounds like the black in your white bone is in excess. Drat.

2. the blade was not sharpnd. Had the very smallest of a tiny bevel and butter knife dull, literally.

3. The springs are not flush on half stop.

4. The sheepsfoot blade is off center. Nearly touching the liner.

Reminds me of a Case from the 90's.

Ouch. :o

As others have said, I'd recommend contacting the dealer from whom you purchased the knife, if you haven't already.

Meanwhile, mine came in, and it is just too cool:

... and I still don't even like beer.

[It has some black near the rear ridge of the pile side cut out. I don't mind it, but will try to get a picture of it soon as a reference point for the above, what I've seen and come to expect to some degree with smooth white bone.]

That was on there since yesterday :p they put it up there late yesterday, I am assuming they are going to leave it up there for a day or two

Most all of the Smooth Ivory bone models have pepper spots to some extent due to the finishing process and is part of 'the nature of the beast'. The buffing compound finds it's way into every crack or crevice (and pores in bone) and I think is also the usual culprit on those knives that have a sluggish action. A good toothbrush scrubbing with hot water & detergent wouldn't hurt, but won't remove all of the specks. Make sure you blow the water out with air or WD-40 and dry and oil the knife after.

If you are using a compressor and air nozzle to blow out crud, be really careful and hold on to the knife securely, or it will 'fly away'. Don't ask me how I know. :o

Is ivory that much less porous that you don't see that issue or do they is a different finishing process?
