The Beer Scout Knife

Just showed up!

Now to scout a new route :D

Oh, and the caplifter works absolutely perfectly! Great job GEC and thanks for the lanyard Mike.

Now, to sand the micarta? Hmmmmm

+1 for lagunitas, had their Lil sumpin sumpin last night!

Will this thread morf into the "Soda Scout Knife" thread? I'm too embarrassed to put anymore of my sub-par photos up and since I only have one soda scout, I can maybe chance one more photo...maybe.

My favorite small bottle they made was the Lil sumpin sumpun Extra from 2009-ish. The small batch they made with the passion fruit.

Hands down, one of their best!

Never had that one but it sounds wonderful. I hate when these companies make great beers only once. Just like Sierra Nevada made a one time special this year called Beer Camp, it was so hoppy and good, such a shame it wont be made again.

Oh well, the soda scout will get plenty of chances to pop more special brew tops :)

Those Bloodwoods are incredible! I'm tempted...

Thanks Mike for getting these Soda Scouts out so incredibly fast. I can't imagine how hectic it must be to unpack GEC's big box and get so many little boxes out in a day. Impressive stuff.

Tied the lanyards on the Soda Scouts today. The bead on the Red Sawcut was machined as an ode to the shape of the Scout shield. For the Micarta I machined an aluminum 357 Magnum cartridge with a brass "bullet".

Clearly, some here produce calendar-grade photographs as a matter of course (including, dedicated skill, time, and/or an exceptional eye for composition). Others get the job done, communicating direct information about their knives. Many fall somewhere in-between. No matter what, we all benefit.

Pictures are the lifeblood of our discussions here, a primary means by which we can share this hobby together no matter how far the distance between us.

Taking and posting pictures takes time (and often a tilt with uncooperative software near and far); I am grateful for everyone who makes the effort.

Post away. :)

I received [a smooth ivory bone Beer Scout] today. It is a beauty. I'm curious as to what the scales will look like after long term use? I'm guessing they will get darker over time. The color is really growing on me though.

GEC's white bone is one of my favorite cover materials. Its (often-seen) variegated effect is the result of oil absorption that occurs in the process of preparing the bone, with no two pieces (and thus no two knives) appearing exactly the same. I've seen the bone become more translucent with use and time (unclear if it's either or both), but also have at least one knife that has stayed "whiter" throughout.

Take some pictures of your new knife, and look (and please show us!) again after using it for a while. :)

I cracked open a Sierra Nevada and asked my wife what she thought about my $100 bottle opener. She didn't think that was too funny lol. Cheers

Too funny. :D

(Tell her it cuts stuff, too...?)

Rockgolfer : That one was purpose made in very limited quantity in the local brewery for a comics festival.
And hop foam is an internationally understood language. Well, quite internationally...!
Best French beers come from Alsace /Lorraine and the North/Flanders. Other parts are best known for wine, but this is out of rhe BS scope.

Was this limited run "Beer Scout" prior to the mods by Evan?

Acadian, this is one of seven O-riginal GEC "Beer Scouts," a short run of parts knives that GEC put together in time for their annual Rendezvous last year.

[GEC had previously released a run of Boy's Knife/#15 "Scouts" with sheepsfoot mains and pen secondaries with these same covers.]

I commissioned Bladeforums member Glennbad to re-cover a #15 Radio Knife (originally clad in the only cover material I could bear knowing was shucked, GEC's nifebrite) in blue bone from Culpepper & Co.

I am mighty pleased with the outcome.

That knife was from the 2014 GEC Rendezvous.

I wrote a song about it... ;)

"You're gone and I gotta buy
Knives all the time
To keep you off my mind
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Buy knives all the time
To keep you off my mind
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Spend my days locked in a haze
Trying to forget you babe
I fall back down
Gotta buy knives all my life
To forget I'm missing you
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh"
