I just got back from vacation yesterday, to a mailbox full of scouts!!!! I originally preordered the ebony Beer Scout and micarta Soda Scout. But after handling my father-in-law's chestnut saw cut, I was madly in love. So on the car ride to the mountains, I put in an order for a sawcut as well.
I love all three knives, and they each have their own feel. The ebony looks quite classy, and should probably be saved for the more upscale brands of beer. The micarta is a nice butterscotch color, and should hold up to heavy use; getting more and more beautiful over time, as hand oils penetrate into the covers.
But the chestnut saw cut is my runaway favorite, thus far. It just looks and feels so incredibly good. Lots of subtle variations of color and texture. It's absolutely gorgeous and wonderfully traditional. This will probably be the one that spends the most time in my pocket. It may even supplant the Remington R-4 for awhile (gasp!!!!!).
As many of you know, I'm a scout pattern fanatic. It's not easy being a US-made scout collector these days, with so few new scouts being released. So this run of knives is very special to me. The Beer Scouts may not be a full traditional scout pattern, but they do retain the most useful implements of the design. And GEC managed to have fun with the "over the top" gimmiky feel that every scout/camp knife should have.
Both the design and the manufacturing quality are off the charts on this run. Near perfection, with only some slight cover variation to make things interesting. Well done, GEC!!!! I love how the easy open notch allows my pinky finger to nestle right in while using the knife, creating a very strong grip for such a small folder. And everybody knows my affinity for any knife with a bail. The sawcut is already attached to my lanyard, keeping it safe from loss.
I'm off to a final concert tonight, before returning to work tomorrow. I'll make sure to test the cap lifter on Friday night, and snap a bunch of pics over the weekend. Here are a couple of quick pics for now.
