The Beer Scout Knife

Both the design and the manufacturing quality are off the charts on this run.
I'm unhappy with the Soda Scouts. The micarta one I got had a scuff across the back spring and liner and a scratched shield. Replaced it with a blood red sawcut which has a chip in the bone.

Will Power - your Beer Scout is developing some nice character.

Buzzbait - that is tooo funny. Though I have to admit the last bullet point sounds great - a Beer Scout with stag covers, file work, and a beer mug blade etch.

Now that there is funny Buzzbait and oh so true.
Picked up an Ivory Bone at the Rendezvous, one of 6 parts knives made with a spear blade.

That right there is my ideal knife. If they ever do a run of that configuration I might stop buying knives. Just perfect.

You are quite unlucky my friend, I bought eight of them (inc. beer scout, soda scout, gunstock, KSF SFO) and they were nearly identical in fit and finish. Even the pull and walk and talk on each knife was eerily similar. A friend of mine did get a red sawcut with a weird anomaly in the bone. In my experience this was a very well done run of knives. Sorry to hear it was not so for you.

In speaking with members at GEC this week, I did clear up a question I had about the soda scout "linen" micarta. There is a very simple reason as to why you can't see the grain of the micarta, and, as I suspected, it is because it isn't linen at all, but ,rather, paper. Not being a fan of paper micarta, beige in particular, I am glad I did not pick that one up. Nice to see GEC trying out new composites though! Hopefully we will see some butterscotch micarta from them one day.

That is a little bit disappointing since everyone expected linen micarta. Oh well, glad that isn't the only one I picked up.

I get excited about new knives from time to time, but seldom as amped up as I've been about the Beer Scout. Between the production versions and the SFO's, we really got our money's worth out of this run. With all of the various shields and covers, there was something for everybody. The Beer Scout is one of the very few knives that I know will stay in my EDC rotation for years to come.

I know that many serious collectors were put off by various aspects of the knife, but it's those aspects that make the Beer Scout truly great. It's the anti-collectors collectible pocketknife. Scout knives have always been sort of "over the top", with all of their various gadgets and gizmos. GEC just took the age old concept, and brought it up another notch or ten.

As proof of concept, I offer to you a stolen copy of the GEC Production Plan Sheet for the Beer Scout Knife. I took it upon myself to do a bit of dumpster diving over the weekend, while GEC security was busy keeping rendezvous visitors in line.

Genius! Funny stuff :D

This is what I suspected also. I tryed like hell to identify the linen and the thought it must be paper. Satisfying that the offical word is out. I don't mind it much I also have a black paper micarta 66 stockman, it's nice to have a wider spectrum of micarta.

I got the Red Sawcut and Micarta Scout versions and they both were incredible! Works of F&F art! Both had perfectly flush springs, all centered blades, and zero wobble.

I don't really look for scratches on new knives as they end up getting scratched immediately. If something bothers me that is not structural I can usually fix it with 2 minutes on a buffing wheel. I actually enjoy doing this as it gives me a chance to go over the knife and smooth everything up a bit...

Disappointed to hear about the paper / linen issue.
I was really looking forward to the linen; to have it described as such and then have it turn out to be paper seems a little disingenuous.

Sure, it's great that GEC is trying out new composites; however, in this case, I feel like they did it at our expense. Shoot, I even took 200grit to mine trying to expose a texture that wasn't ever there.

I'd love a Pemberton/Caplifter. The pen on the Pemberton is useless and with a caplifter in such a small knife, I could carry that in my watch pocket without altering my EDC rotation...that knife would just simply live there.

Mine is lost between Frankfurt airport and customs since the 20th. I wanted to take it with me on holiday. Oh well I hope it gets here and wasn`t stolen or lost.
