The BK11 mini chef mod. FINISHED! Pics And It Did Happen!

Did some more work with the finer drum, then went to 180 grit and swabbed it with alcohol to get an idea of what it's gonna look like finished:

Hard to remember what it looked like when I started it. Finer grit tomorrow; considering a thumb/finger divot at the front of the scales (see Dex's 16 and the TOPS B.O.B.) and then some finish and a sheath. The stock one's useless now. Anybody need an 11 factory sheath? Send me a PM or email.

really getting somewhere.
I'd stick with the 180 lengthwise on the spine until you get those grinding marks out from tip to butt.

Well, as if I didn't need a reason to get yet another Becker, I'm pretty sure "most awesome BBQ accessory" is good enough. That is some crazy gorgeous work.

oh yeah!!

It's carbon, so take it up to 360 at least. Finer scratch patterns leave less room for moisture to be captured.

Thank you for your wisdom, sensei. That's good information and instructive as well. I still have to do the blade proper....I'm trying to finish the handle/wood part first, though, as that's how I keep marking up the blade (too many "oh shnit" moments).

Awesome Granite! It turned out really nice. Those scales look great too. Can't wait for the final unveiling!

maybe the forum will let me post today.

Normally (for Daizee):
1) finish blade and ricasso first, before scales
2) tape heavily
3) cut rough handle slabs, proud on all sides
4) drill first pin hole through tang and one scale
5) pin scale for fit (no glue), drill second hole
6) insert second fitting pin, drill remaining holes in that scale
7) repeat 4-6 for second scale
8) pin scales together (without blade), mark where front of scales will be
9) cut/grind/finish scale fronts to final finish level (sand to 600 etc.)
10) glue scales to tang including pins all in one step
11) clean glue spooge at front of scales before it is fully set
12) tape up blade some more - ALL THE WAY AROUND
13) shape scales
14) sand scales and tang
15) untape blade, clamp in vise with soft jaws (I use leather) by handle, brush tang and spine over blade together for a smooth transition
16) sheath
17) edge - VERY LAST THING!!!! else steps 1-16 are all opportunities to cut yourself badly.

Sure, daizee, now you tell me.....

I'm copying that list. In all seriousness, it is very helpful, even though I've already done most everything bass ackwards...
Still gonna have trouble with 13 & 14, even with the blade all taped up...I dinged mine with the sanding drum and I'm having a bear of a time getting it sanded out:

one on each side, I may end up just leaving it, as a reminder. I'll just tell anyone who asks that it's my "maker's mark".

Also, something's wrong with your post, daizee...can't get it to work quoted here or on tjswarbrick's thread....

This is a pretty sweet mod. I may end up doing something similar to my 14 now. I especially like the way you changer the drop point and removed the nub between the blade edge and handle. It looks like that gave you a bit more space for your hand and gives you more control.
