The Bonecutter Files

True FB.

If you look at the pic of the big Ganga on HI's website except for the handle it's more like the bonecutter blade wise.

The newer ones have more of a curve to them.

The bottom one is a Bonecutter. Notice how much metal it has farther out the blade. Gives it a great chopping power. The bottom one is 16" and 25oz! The curve is much more like the YCS, but because of the handle they handle way better than a YCS

I noticed in this photo of yours:

that the Samsher and the GK Bonecutter are VERY close in shape, except for the point and the edge profile. This is why I figured that the good Sgt Khadka could reproduce the BC. I agree this first round doesn't look so close. Maybe this can be refined?

In Fiddleback's picture:

The middle blade is a Samsher, and the right most blade is a Bonecutter... you can see again they are fairly similar. However, since FB has a Sherpa, I'm beginning to think the HI BC prototype looks more like that, what do you think?

Also, this sheath design:

is simply superb. It's very close the the type that Sir Badger Ilbruche makes lately. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=538909 see:

actually, i just found this Dui Chirra picture from Ilbruche:

mmm, striking :)

and now it's off to work. I'll be there late, and won't able to post. Will read mail if it trickles in though. Play nice.

This thread has turned int to an awesome pic extravaganza. Quite a great one to look through!

If I could be assured that it could make it back to me I would send one of my 18" models to Yangdu

perhaps a masonite cut-out life tracing :)

as i suggested before, one of the best ways to describe these things, is to take a picture on a reference 1x1 inch grid. that way we know size and width and ratios.

For reference.

This blade shape comes the closest.

Thats definatly how to get the best from the kamis I think, there not usualy to sharp on drawings & plans etc but can copy an original if they can handle it.

~Its that 3 dimesional thing!

I've followed HD's ongoing campaign to get an HI Bonecutter model with great interest. I've always thought there were similarities between the original Ganga Ram blade shape and the bonecutter. Also, both of my GRS's (17 and 15 inch) have a bit of a wider edge bevel that my other khuks. Like Fiddleback mentioned, I think this wide bevel adds to the great chopping abilities of the blade.

Being a GRS freak I am also attracted to the sweeping curve of the bonecutter's blade shape. It seems to me that the prototype of this thread lacks the "beavertail" ( can you tell I'm from Oregon?) weight forward profile that the bonecutter pics show. I really like the almost "cartoony" shape of the bonecutter.

My handle tastes are still being formed so I can't comment much there, but I see what HD is saying about the bonecutter's handle design working with a classic chopping technique.

I definitely have the bonecutter fever, and would love to see a model that closer to the pics posted by HD and Fiddleback. IMHO:)

I see where this falls way short of an exact copy.
However, I like the current one better (aestheitcs-wise, as that's all I have to go on) than the GK BC.

If, after the dust settles and you have a more exact copy, you want to part with this one, let me know.

get in line bucko :D

I agree, I like the asthetics better on the recent incarnation.

I think you have a better chance of winning the Powerball than Bladite surrendering it. So something like 140,000,000 to 1.

Certainly the Bonecutters aren't about aesthetics. They're rather rough and ugly. They're about outchopping everything else. Mine chops far superior to any other knife I've ever chopped with, and even comes close to my GB wildlife hatchet.

They're also about rarity. There never were many, there aren't gonna be any more.

Yeah the bonecutter is mega "Villager" In fact on all of mine you can actually hold the blade up to the light and see where the individual hammer strikes were. Praj who sold them and made some of them said they were for hacking chicken and goats apart at Dashain.

If you like sexy looking blades the BC is not for you.

I have found that often there is a vast difference in taste between people who have khuks as users and those who have them for the cool factor.

The cool factor folks seem to favor bigger, thicker bulkier longer heavier overall.

The users are usually wanting something in the neighborhood of 18" and under and 23 to 27 oz.

Of course that can change if the person is not carrying the khuk and using them for large chopping only.:)

I guess the bonecutter lacks the "classic" lines of say, a more ceremonial khuk, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The bonecutter has a lot of personality, and gets very high marks as a chopper by those that have one.

Because the heritage of the bonecutter is that of a working blade, I would love to see a no-frills villiager model in the size and weight ranges that HD mentioned.
I could see it becoming a very popular model.

Good to se the Bonecutter quest is still on... if HI can produce something that BC owners agree performs just as well, sign me up for one!

Bladite, get choppin' with that prototype!

I wonder if a wooden replica of a BC wouldn't do just as well to send to the kamis? Isn't that how the YCS came to be? It'd probably give 'em a feel for the exact shape without any BC owners having to fret about losing their khuks in the mail.
