The Bonecutter Files

I have one, had the chance to buy two, and hesitated...

Big mistake.

At this rate the Bonecutter is going to reach the mythical status of a '65 Fender Stratocaster. I don't own a bonecutter, so I have the Bonecutter Blues...:(

Get yourself a BGRS. It's similar, and it'll take the edge (sorry) off the blues.

I like the prototype as a blade but agree it doesn't seem to match the BC's design very much. (That said, how does it PERFORM? If it chops like a motherf... I mean BC, then that's an important thing)

I think the blade needs more "belly" towards the end, the bevel needs to be wider, and the handle needs to be thinner and less ringed to make this more BC-ish.

Love the mods some people have made to their blades/handles, and the sheaths. Wish I was handier and had more tools to do such things.

LOL, Aardvark, I have a 17 inch, 25 ounce GRS by Bura which is my favorite chopping blade. Here's a pic:

So my blues are a little less "edgy".
The other medicine I got recently was this 15 inch, 22 ounce BGRS by Vim.

Even though it developed some edge waves at the sweet spot, after chopping some green doug fir, I decided to keep it and work on the ripples. I steeled the bumps, tapped them with a ball peen hammer and did some sharpening. It seems to have helped and I think as I continue to sharpen it will only get better. By the way, Yangdu was MORE than fair in dealing with this. Thanks Yangdu!

You can see the waves in the second pic. I really like this blade,( see the nice wide edge bevel) it is a fabulous chopper and the handle is super comfortable and sized right for my hand. It is what I grab for lighter work because it is so much fun to use. Lewis and Clark could have used one of these! Not to sound corny, but I feel a connection with this khuk.

What I really wanted to point out is the similarity to the blade shape of the bonecutter. Both blades seem of the same gene pool. So yes, I don't have it too bad, but if I have a chance to snag a Bonecutter, all's fair when you got the blues!:D

While this new khukri is not a bonecutter by what I have seen presented here by the others, I like it.

Perhaps they could go into production under a different name?

Because IMO this new khukri very much resembles a Chiruwa Ang Khola... but with the clean smooth lines and grace of a Sirupati... and I find it very appealing visually. I also like the white metal fittings and more traditional bolster.

And at 6'5", I am fond of large khukri's. I like them at 20"+. A little longer for a sirupati/chitlangi type but more towards 20" for a wide belly blade like this one.

So yes, I like this new khukri.

Go back to the drawing board on the Bonecutter angle, but rename this one and keep it in production. JMO.

I think you have a better chance of winning the Powerball than Bladite surrendering it. So something like 140,000,000 to 1.

Let's put it this way. IF you win powerball, we can talk ;) Yangdu will want in on this too :)

Otherwise, well, MINE MINE MINE MINE and MINE.

Thank you for the help, Bladite

Well, the "bonecutter" arrived today.

It's a pretty subsantial blade. I took some quick pictures for now to compare against a few other HI khukris that I have handy... Here they are:

Features from top to bottom: AK, "BC", CAK, all 20 inches. The edge profile on the "BC" appears to be about 1/2 of that of the AKs. Might be really solid at chopping?

Features a classic Old Style GRS and the "BC". The GRS is really what the "BC" should be imho. Look at the edge profile on that. Look at how super wide and blunt. Perfection :)

Finally, a LARGE GRS, large CAK, large GRS, CAK, "BC". Interesting to compare overall shapes and edge profiles.

My conclusion is that the "BC" with the 4 handles pins that I received today is perhaps a Super-CAK with 5mm edge profile, but sadly, it's is not the Praj/GK-Bonecutter copy we all would like.

I'm going to suggest some templates and models for another go?

Looks like if you just hollow out the front part of that old style GRS you'd be pretty close to the bonecutter.

Man I really like those old style GRS's.

Great pics and good analysis. Bottom line, as Hollow shows the old style GR's are much closer to the ideal shape of the weight-forward bonecutter.

I love this new one, but it is hard for the Sgt. to make something so radically different than what he's used to. This "new" BC is a basic beautiful Samsher style blade with a hell for stout handle and an AK fuller up top, that the Samshers normally don't have.

That's about it. I still wouldn't turn it down though! :D

It looks a lot like my Samsher, it doesn't have the fullers but It has the same full tang. I think that is why my samcher is balanced so well. It only has two pins but still has the full tang. The traditional bolsters and the wider butt cap seem to help with the balance as well. You get more mass for impact without having it feel heavy in you hand. I really like the sgt's work.....

Big mistake.

I blew it even worse. I wrote to the guy making them in late '03 or early '04. Heard nothing for 6 or 7 months. He finally did write back to me, but by then I had judged him (incorrectly I'm sure) as unreliable, plus I had already sent all my money to Reno. I never did follow up. Dumb.....!
