Chris, I can't give you history via chapter and verse but in talking to Tony a few years back he explained that he always liked to carry a larger slipjoint in his back pocket in addition to smaller knives for detail work or everyday tasks. Out of that was born his "BackPocket" pattern. I don't know what trapper frame he initially may have based it upon but it has been produced with a variety of blade grinds.

Short version:

"Over the years, Bose also carried a Case folding hunter in his back pocket next to his wallet because he didn’t like the way belt sheaths hung up on things. Bose modified a Remington 1123 pattern for his back pocket knife, which comes in 4-inch and 4-1/2 inch sizes, the latter with a flush joint."

Here's one by Mike Zscherny that I used to have:

This one by Reese had nice stag but it has moved on:

4 1/2 by Reese in mammoth, also no longer mine:

The rare Jessica Alba model:

I still have a 4 inch shadow by Tony.

Thanks, Mikey! (And Jessica!)

Mike that BP with the mammoth is awesome! I don't think I could have ever parted with that one.

Most of my slipjoints made so far have been based on that backpocket pattern. Although I make them a bit smaller. This is the one that made it into Blade magazine.

and here is one of the shadow pattern versions of it

Thanks for the history lesson, Mike. I don't know that I could have turned the Zscherny loose.

Blues - I notice all knives posted thus far are bare-back. Would a knife of this pattern with an end cap be considered a "BackPocket" knife too?

Flymon,

That knife of Kerry's ain't no slouch and I bet that etched A2 will cut well. :D.

I have been known to put mine in my back pocket, but old habits die hard since my right front is usually empty other than a knife. I have found that when I do not mix anything with the knives in my pocket (other than a bandanna, took the hint from jackknife on that) they will stay decent looking for years.

Keeps me from breaking my no-purse pledge. :D.

That is exactly correct Gus! :D The knife goes in the right front all by its self. Folding money, change & lip balm in the left front. And the keys stay in the ignition where they belong! I also picked up on jackknife's suggestion about the bandana here a couple of years ago and gave it a try. But I ended up using about 1/2 of a worn out bandana to cut down on the bulk. The knife stays in great looking shape.

Thanks Blues for putting it on there. Let me not forget to thank Tony Bose for sharing his great knowledge and his patterns along with Bill Ruple and all the others that have helped me along the way.

Elliott & Mike - thanks for the info. I used to carry a U.S. Schrade LB7 next to my wallet in high school. I can't say I have anything to contribute from my meager collection to this thread, but I'm sure enjoying all these purty pitchers!

Is this the new addition? When I saw it disappear from the website, I figured you probably got it. It had been calling to me all week but it's voice kept echoing in my empty wallet.

Dang, that flush joint is da bomb and Enrique's work is eye popping. Just beautiful work guys. Thanks for posting it.
